What Is The Best World Series Game Ever?

I was at Game #6 in 1986. I am also a METS fan, so that was my choice.

100% agree and not necessarly because I am a Reds fan. It is such an iconic game. Dewey's catch to rob Morgan of a HR. Carbo's PH 3 run HR in the bottom of the 8th. Fisks' walk of HR. We paid them back in game 7 though.
If I remember right this was the first WS game where they put camera's in the OF to catch the game from that direction.

October 9, 1938: Lou Gehrig's last world series game. He was forced to retire on April 30, 1939. I would love to watch this game, but I never seen a copy for sale.
I'm a Gehrig fan.

That was a great game, but the topic was best World Series games.
Perfect games are amazing - especially during a World Series but let be honest - watching them is kinda boring. Kirk Gibsons home run is id say one of the most memorable home runs ever! Last years game 6 was pretty exciting and nail biting at the same time. My vote would have to go to the Yankees Vs Redsox in 2004. Cant top that one. Not even the Bill Buckner 86 fiasco.

WOW ... that would be a fun game to watch. I hope ESPN shows a replay.

<< <i>When your favorite team has won about 25% of the World Series ever played there are just So MANY to choose from!!!!!!! Its hard to pick just one!!!!!! The one's I like typically end up looking like this!
Do not the Yankees also own the most failure losses in the World Series ? I am not a Yankee hater, but still, look at the total cost over the last century that team has spent, and failed.
1988 Dodgers Gibson game for me.
<< <i>On a side note, best World Series series I've ever seen is the Yankees-Diamondbacks... that series had everything, EVERYthing that made baseball great. >>
I would like to change my vote to this series also. I know what you mean by 'EVERYthing' with this one. Start to finish. I had to watch game 7 on TV even though was in Phoenix. When it happened (the Gonzales hit) at the end, I yelled so yard I started crying, in front of other men. Stood by it afterwards when they mocked me.
<< <i>Kirk Gibsons home run is id say one of the most memorable home runs ever! >>
Mike Davis set up Gibby's blast by drawing a two-out walk off Eck, who at the time was quite arguably the most unhittable pitcher in the game, and it should never have happened.
Davis was a terrible hitter. Eck coughed it up.
i honestly can't recall ANYTHING else about that game.
I just WISH Mo had gone to first instead of 2nd

<< <i>Game 7 of the '91 series - what more do you want in the rubber match game in arguably the best WS ever? >>
YES!

If that scanerio was involved the Yankees or the Red Sox, they would STILL be talking about that game (meaning, the media would not have had a wink of sleep in 10 months; it would have been 24-7 coverage for 10 months). Ok, I exaggerated, but you get the point!
Seriously, forget which teams were involved, let's compare the scenarios.....
Which game would be the best game?
1) Walk off HR to win Game 7.
2) Walk off HR being "waved" fair.
3) Walk off "reached first base on an error and run scores" (yes, I know other runs were scored in that inning).
4) Pitcher pitches a 10 inning complete game shutout and game 7 is won on RBI single.
5) Home team is down to their last strike in the bottom of the 9th, a 2 run triple ties the game; top of the 10th, the away team hits a dramatic 2 run HR to demoralize the home team; then in the bottom of the 10th down to their last strike again, the home hits a 2 run single to tie it; then in the bottom of the 11th, the same guy who hits the 2 out, 2 run triple hits a walk off HR to win it.
Folks, all of the above were dramatic and some of baseball's best moments, but how can anything other than scenario number 5 be the greatest game. The only argument against it is that it was only a Game 6 and not a Game 7. Also, I am sure that there are other details of those other games that I didn't mention.
The simple fact is that those other games have had years of media hype, while the 5th scenario has only had one year of coverage. I think as time goes on, Game 6 of last year will universally be considered the greatest game in the history of baseball.
Simply put, Hollywood would never make a movie with scenario #5. It would be too unrealistic!
Just trying to make my argument.

<< <i>there has NEVER been a World Series game where a team was down to their last strike TWICE and then came back to tie it....and then win it in extra innings on a walk off HR. >>
Although The METS, in the 10th inning of game #6, were down to their last strike TWICE as well (Ray Knight and Mookie Wilson both had two strikes on them with two outs).

I actually did not realize that.... but it wasn't the Cardinals!
Plus, it didn't end with a walk off HR! It ended with a walk off error!

<< <i>All of those listed had drama and were great games. But, trying to speak objectively hear.... there has NEVER been a World Series game where a team was down to their last strike TWICE and then came back to tie it....and then win it in extra innings on a walk off HR. David Freese hits a triple to tie it with 2 strikes....Lance Berkman gets a hit with two strikes to tie it AGAIN. Then, David Freese (the same guy who hits the triple), hits a walk off HR to send it to game 7.

While I have to agree, the thing going against last year's game 6 is that David Freeze was the hero. If it was Albert Pujols, then it would already be touted as the greatest game ever. If David Freeze ends up being a perennial all-star then this game will be even greater because it was the first glimpse of his stellar career.

I was hoping someone would remember this exciting game! Game 6 was won in the bottom of the 11th by the GW homer by Kirby setting up Game 7's 10-inning 1-0 thriller with Morris going the distance.

You did leave out that the Pirates scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take a 9-7 lead, the last three runs on a two out home run by Hal Smith, a guy that didn't even start the game. And that the game was against the Yankees, a team that won 7 of the last 11 World Series.
Anyway, it's a fun discussion. Game 6 last year was a great game as well.
Matt
Nellie Cruz isn't the 'goat' there. To me there are two issues here:
The Michael Young error in the 6th (and to a lesser degree his one in the fourth). Instead of runner at 2nd and two outs, you have runners at 1st and 2nd and only one out. This effectively ends Colby Lewis's night. He had been pitching very well to that point and likely would have gone into the 7th. Instead, he leaves the game with a 1 run lead and the bullpen allows 1 run to score.
Michael Young's horrible defense when his team needed him the most cost the Rangers 2 runs.
Darren 'bleepin' Oliver. It may be irrational, but I will never forgive him and this is where I lay most of the blame. Feliz blows the save in the 9th. It happens. But then written from Hollywood, Josh Hamilton blasts a solo shot with a torn abdominal muscle in the top of the 10th inning. Rangers regain the lead. Oliver needs to get 3 hitters out. 3 extremely weak hitters... Daniel Descalso, Jon Jay, and a pitcher. And LaRussa had burned his bench so it would have to be a pitcher. Descalso and Jay are both left handed hitters. Oliver is a left handed specialist. That's where the game should have ended. But it didn't and we know what happened.
Feliz should've burried the 0-2 pitch to Freeze in the dirt....Washington should have gone right back out there with Feliz for the 10th...Cruz should have peeked and realized he had more room...shoulda..coulda...woulda...
But thanks...I'll be mad about this for the next 10 days or so, and then some one will mention it all over again....

<p>It’s been close to a month since the Rangers choked the World Series up, and I think I’m finally over it, so I wanted to share my trip to Game 4 of the World Series with the board. I’m a diehard Rangers fan, and Game 4 was on my 41st birthday, and I did it in style. Here’s some pics of the night.
Walking up:
One of my friends arranged for my wife and I to be flag unfurlers on the field during the National Anthem. Here is my wife at check-in:
One of our first duties was to assist in unpacking the flag and putting it together:
We then practiced a couple of times, learned our cues, and took the flag up underneath the stadium via tunnel access into the area down the 3rd base line.
We waited what seemed like forever in that tunnel, finally time to take the field. You can see us all bringing in the flag in the outfield.
Once on the field, here are some views from my camera phone:
Here are the Rangers lining up for the National Anthem:
As the Anthem begins, we unfurl the flag:
When it got to “Banner yet wave”, we had been instructed to make the flag wave. It was incredible, the crowd went nuts, and I’ve got to admit that a couple tears streamed down my face, it was surreal. My wife is the lady on the lower far right, and I’m the wide guy in the red shirt, black shorts beside her.
At the end of the Anthem, two helicopters flew over us. One had the Texas flag on the bottom, and the other had the American flag. My camera phone was able to capture it:
Here’s a better photo of the choppers:
Next up was the first pitch by two current Texans, Nolan Ryan and George W. Bush:
This was my view from the camera phone:
Here’s a shot from another angle that I’m going to have to get autographed. You can see me taking a photo to Bush’s left, I’m the blurry wide guy in the red shirt, black shorts, holding the camera up:
And here’s another shot where you can see left to right, my backside, my wife’s backside, George W. and Nolan Ryan. This is another one I’m going to get autographed:
After we got the flag put up (which took all of about 3 minutes, the Rangers hooked us up with a bag full of goodies, TShirts, hats, programs, etc. My wife and I then entered the Ballpark to go to the game and spied the ALCS trophies. Of course, I had to have a picture:
We got to see a great game, that was incredibly exciting, capped off by this Mike Napoli 3 run blast that removed any doubt as to the outcome. Here are some camera phone pics I got from our seats of the blast, in the first one, you can see the ball just beginning to leave the homeplate area, I got lucky and just happened to be taking the pictures at that time:
Holland pitched a whale of a good game, and here he is coming off the field after retiring the Cardinals in the 8th:
Holland led off pitching the ninth, but couldn’t quite get it done so it was time for Neftali:
Feliz recorded the final out on this pitch, and this capped off my favorite experience at the Ballpark.

Great photos Mike.
Watch that game and all of it's twists and turns, like Tony Kubek getting hit in the throat on a bad hop!!!!!, that led to Maz's HR and tell me that wasn't the greatest WS game ever.
If you haven't watched that whole game, you don't really know how awesome those last few innings were.

...and I agree with the statement that if it were Pujols and not Freese that hit that HR, it would be a no-contest lock for best ever.
Edit to add... this discussion also wouldn't be happening if Game 6 had involved an East coast team...you know I'm right.
