Group Welcome Home Sports Package for Larry(llafoe) forum member serving in Afghanistan... 3 weeks t

I always salute our troops, and am thankful for their courage and bravery for our freedom.

Llafoe on the boards here is coming home in 11 weeks, so I thought we could put together a few things sports related for him. A welcome home sports package. This is my way of saying thank you, and if your interested just post here, and we'll work out the details behind the scenes. If you post here I'll PM you, and we'll get organized.

I want to have it already waiting for him at his home when he arrives back. Also any thoughts or ideas are welcomed. I'll gather everything up and ship to him when he's on his way back.

Let me know if your interested.

Larry also has a son Larsen age 11, and Larissa age 13.

I will PM anyone who posted here after this weekend. We will have the month of September and October to gather items, or homeade ones. I will then ship all at once to him and his kids. Notes can be written, homeade cards, whatever. Creativity is the best way.

I'll be in touch, and yes I'm officially back on the boards. image

Does he like anything besides reds? Anything unopened? Da bears? Non sport? I'll dig up reds if that's his thing, but it might be fun to get something else too. Ohio st football?

  • Larry has two kids Larsen 11, Larissa 13.

Will also update it in the main post.

Anything will be amazing for Larry and his kids. BBCE certificates, a pack, anything really. I'm trying to find out more about his collecting. Personally I'm going to get something for his kids.

When someone is in the military the family is as much of a hero as the person away IMO, for them not having their loved around. This will be fun and a great pay it forward gesture.

I encourage anyone that can get involved no matter how large or small to do so. Homeade things are just as valuable. We are coming up on 9/11, this is a great way to remember everything our country stands for, and to be generous and nice to a fellow collector and protector of our freedom.

You can imagine my shock when I saw my name in the subject line... when you see your name in the military, you're almost always in trouble! image

I've never met Mike. What a way to introduce yourself!

I've been stuck in Iraq and Afghanistan four of the past five years. I'm ready to get out of here. I think my luck card is getting close to expiration!

I began collecting PEZ with my children in Iraq (I've collected on-and-off since 1990) to "connect" with them while I was at war. We began collecting coins while I was in Afghanistan the first time and now Cincinnati Reds baseball cards since I've been in Afghanistan the second time. Larsen loves sports PEZ (I'm sure he has them all), coins and baseball cards. He went through a very brief hockey period (and I mean very brief image) and has stuck with the "Big Red Machine." Larissa loves history and we began collecting R.R. Donnelley's Lakeside Classics during one of my tours. She loves soccer, but doesn't collect cards. Larsen is in the 6th grade and plays guitar and violin. Larissa is in the 8th grade and is learning French and plays the cello.

I love offering giveaways on these boards; I've never been a recipient of such consideration. Larsen and Larissa will be very surprised when I return home this time. I know Larsen especially will cherish Mike's, et al, generosity.

    I'm humbled.

I should leave here 4 weeks from today...

Our alarm clock is usually 3-5 rounds from a 152mm howlitzer. I'm going to miss all the EOD detonations, the sound from the .50 cal machine guns, the 107mm rockets flying 10 feet over my head and hoping they land more than 35 meters away so I'm not in the kill zone... holding my own x-ray plate as they x-ray my broken ribs, having needles poked in me and oxygen stuck in my nose because I'm gagging too much and spitting up too much bile after inhaling too much white phosphorous gas... I won't know what to do without all my handguns, rifles and grenades strategically placed around my person... watching the expressions of the Local Nationals as I wave to them while my buddy is having a staring contest with an Afghan with his shiny new AK-47 and a beard that would make any Taliban proud! Maybe the torn muscles in my back (it's amazing what you can tear when you trip in full battle rattle in a helicopter) and jammed fingers will finally heal once I return home. I can't wait to eat "real" food and not get ran over when we're being attacked during meal times by some scared Polish soldier! This place is a dream come true... a place to stay, enough to eat and all the ammunition and grenades you can carry... what more can a person need? :-D

  • As we approach the time when Larry comes home, I wanted to bring this back to the main page. I have received some items already, and expect there are others wanting to contribute.

Larry comes home from Afghanistan between the 16th-20th of November. I would like to have all items recieved by the 10th of November. To put the card care package together. This will be really special before the holiday of Thanksgiving. Great way for us to give thanks...

If you are interested or haven't sent any items and have been waiting just PM me, and I'll give you my shipping information.

    Thanks,

Edit: I PM'd anyone that responded last time with this thread, and sorry if duplicate PM's. This is going to be great, Mark I know you'll help me put this together and get shipped out.

Please post any questions as others may have some. Bottom line Larry is a Reds fan, period. That's really all he collects. So anything Reds is perfect.
