It's been a while since we had a Anglo-Saxon Penny thread ...
S-1151, Obverse: +AEÐELRED REX ANGL· , Reverse: +EA/DPOL/D M'O LVND (London Mint, Moneyer = Eadweald) ... Did I get the attribution correct?
The peck marks are a bit of a distraction, but are fairly common on these coins.

One thing I find interesting about these coins ... PCGS will give a numeric grade to a peck marked coin, while NGC puts them in a Details holder, noting "Peck Marked".

The Vikings would gouge the coins to ensure they were made of silver.

They both dig into the surface and protrude from the surface. Think of what happens when you chop into a tree with an axe.
If I had to guess how they were formed, I'd say the coin is placed on a solid object (tree stump?), and a dagger is thrust into the surface of the coin. But, I'm not a Viking from a millennium ago, so that's just a guess.

If PCGS will grade these Anglo-Saxon pennies, how far back do they go with medieval coins before the cutoff? And is it just English hammered that they'll grade? Reason I ask is that I have a 13th century Spanish piece to submit, maybe. All my ancients go to NGC but I'm going to probably be playing with some dark age and medieval stuff, too, soon.
