Need grade opinions on a Canadian 1931 5c - another image

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,139 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm torn between two grades on this one. The coin has lustre not seen in the image. I would really appreciate any opinions on the coin's grade. Thanks.

AU50 if the lustre is there. Just based on the photo I'd have said EF45. The strikes on these make the EF-AU grades tough to tell apart, especially from images.

    AU55.

The fields look like there's evidence of circulation.

I suspect the image does not quite capture the look of this one. Unfortunately, these George V nickels are a pain to grade based on striking characteristics. I suspect it is easily an AU coin

Thanks all. As I continue to compare it to the drawing in Charlton's Canadian Coin Grading Guide, the more I'm leaning towards the AU opinions.

AU50 with luster, EF45 if not.
These coins are tough to grade because of the normally poor strikes.

    Senex,
WHY are they tough to grade?
there were NO parking meters at that time??????....
I believe it is easier to get one of these in MS than a , lets say, 1948 or 1950.
Mechanical parking meters scratched the nickels....
perhaps Ajaan should post another Image???

Nickel is quite a hard metal, so the strikes on these are rarely full. There's plenty of MS ones, but due to the strikes often it is hard to tell apart any grades from EF45-MS62, especially on images where lustre is hard to capture.

The George V nickels are tough to grade because there is a significant difference in the quality of strikes- could be issues with worn dies.

The second image confirms AU is appropriate- just may not be 55 or 58

My first thought was AU-55, but it is so hard to grade from a photo. BTW - Your photos really are getting better!
