In the past a lot of fun has been made about my imaging . . .

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,112 ✭✭✭✭✭
especially among the oldtimers here. The images below are probably the best I have ever taken. Question for Canadian collectors, when did Canada start making proof coins? Was it 1983? The 1981 50c below looks proof but it might be a Specimen coin or P-L coin. Opinions?

Nice pix and outstanding frosting, esp on that $!

edited to add: I've never quite gotten the various designation of Canadian coins made for collectors. Per my 20th century Karaue, Proof sets started in 1981. However specimen sets seem to date back to 1902. The earlier specimens (also desgnated as specimen proofs in the individual coin listings) are quite expensive until the 1971 and later sets for which the price is substantially less.

    Morning Ajaan,
unfortunately my Canada coin knowledge (for whatever little there is) is from 1858 to 1967, with few exceptions. Anything else is not my beer.
as for your Images. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them
I might, hower, suggest you look at a photo SW program.
I took the liberty and copied your image and made just one small adjustment. See the result.
there are many programs available, from :free" to windows to horrendous prices.
I use ACDsee14. it does everything plus what one needs for $ 30 (for 2 computers)
this is your image slightly adjusted.

Seems like the set-up really favoring cameo images. Nicely done, Don!

Canadian sets have been confusing for a lot of people because they have changed their designations through the years and some years over lap. They had specimen sets from 1858-1967 with two different finishes(matte or mirror). They had proof-like from 1961-1967. They had brilliant uncirculated from 1968-2003. They had specimen sets from 1970-2006(brilliant relief on brilliant background). The first true proofs(what we call proof coins in the USA) were minted in 1981 with the frosted relief against a mirrored back ground. Of course along the way there were special mintages like the Prestige sets from 1971-1980. Confused yet?

Thanks Jon, I wasn't sure if it was 1981 or 1983 for proof coins.

Wish I could say that I knew all that information off the top of my head--but I didn't. Just went to my trusty Charlton catalogs.image

No, no, we weren't ridiculing your imaging.

The first Canadian proofs were in 1973 for the Olympic $5 and $10 coins. Proof Sets started in 1981.

Just because someone took the pics with your camera doesnt mean you took them...

All kidding aside not bad, I find I get the best results with proof/prooflike coins when I have then at an angle from my light source. Really can make the mirrors jump out.

I only wish my pics were half as good!

I've been thinking about taking a white bed sheet and making a tent out of it. Anything that might help. image

Way to go! Those are really sharp.

I copied Ajaans Image and just made ONE adjustment.
nothing wrong with his pictures... just needs a certain adjustment to show the real thing.
Ajaan, do the coins look like your Images??? or is mine closer with the adjustment?
