1984 Topps Walter Payton

This was the card I was most optimistic about on my last submission, from the last group rip from BBCE....and it comes back an 8. I posted a thread not long ago about surface being the most difficult thing to pick up but I sure can't see any flaws. Just don't get this grade...image

Walter looks like he is confused about the grade as well!! image Looks like a high end 8 from the scan.

Very nice card , but for this particular card , imo the lower right hand corner appears a tad soft . Still a nice card nonetheless .--- Sonny

Thanks for the feedback. What are the flaws you see that bring it down to an 8? For what it's worth, any white specs you see are from the scanner not the card

  • These are all absolutely beautiful cards, I really like the Fouts.
But I think the Mattingly is off center just enough to not get a 10.

Thank you cocoa///anyone else think I have a shot for an upgrade with any of these or should I just save my money?

Also, does everyone recommend I crack them out of the cases if I do send them in?

Every card you posted is thin on the left side. Not by much, but enough to keep it out of a 10 slab. (my opinion, of course)

Ya, grades look about right to me. Strict but about right. Sure if you crack them and resub you might get a 10... or might get more 8's.
  • I dont collect much football, but I love that 84 Payton. Wow.

That's the one I am struggling the most with. It's notoriously difficult to find high grade, but this one's a blazer. When I pulled it I thought to myself "at least a 9, might have a slight shot at a 10" and I get an 8?

As for the rest, I appreciate the input regarding centering. You really think they're worse than 40/60?

On all of them but the Jordan, there looks to be a slight tilt. The Jordan looks off t/b to not bump.

That Payton is a beast. I had a 100 card lot of them at one time that yielded one 9. Very very tough card. Unfortunately, yours does look to be in the right holder. Maybe an 8.5 bump but not sure it will find a 9. image

...edited to say, that Fouts is one of my favorite cards. Nice card.

    Thanks,

I think the Payton has a bit of a tilt. Not as bad as those in the recent group rip but still there.

The slight wear on that bottom corner is what makes the Payton an 8. They are extremely tough on modern cards that they know have a low pop with a star player.

I couldn't help but post to this. I had two Mario Lemieux RC's OPC (1) PSA 8 the other PSA 9. I cracked them and resubmitted them. The both came back as MISCUT. I called PSA, explained the situation and what I did. They re-evaluated the cards and they came back as (1) PSA 8 and (1) PSA 9. If I hadn't called when the posted my results, they would have come back as MISCUTs.

I am sure we all have stories like this. In my opinion, PSA has been rushing orders and not doing a thorough grading.

  • I agree that I think the Payton card is slightly tilted, plus may possibly have a tad bit of wear on the (both?) bottom corner(s). Maybe it's just the scan, but from the scan shows I would have to agree with a high-end 8 or very low end 9 assessment.

Also, you mention that any white specs are from the scanner, but they appear to be different on each card? For example, the Fouts card has quite a few white specs around Fouts, behind him, and on the Offensive lineman. But the Mattingly has less and different ones and the Jordan has even less. That could be I suppose from cards going in and out of the scanner or being scanned at different locations of the scanner. Those cards do all look like nice 9s, but it's just hard to say if they should/could be 10s without seeing large scans with no extra specs or anything from the scanner, and also seeing the backs might help as well.

I guess I will hold on to all of them except the Payton. There really is no downside to cracking that as a PSA 8 is next to worthless anyway, but based on everyone else's feedback looks like the other 3 have no chance of a bump.

Yeah, I don't know what the deal is with my scanner but none of the cards have any white specks. And like I said, I know 60/40 is still supposed to be ok for a 10, and even though none of these are 50/50, I find it hard to believe any of them are worse than 40/60
