PSA Grading - Cracked and Re-Submitted

I thought I would share this thw group and get some feedback. I had (2) 85-85 Mario Lemieux RC's in PSA 8. I cracked them to see if PSA was consistent with their grading. The grades posted, the both came back MISCUTS. I called PSA and asked for a re-evaluation of the cards, which they did. Both cards came back as PSA 9's. So, I went from a PSA 8 to MISCUT to PSA 9.

I have done this a couple of times with 86-87 OPC cards. I cracked (4) Gretzky's #3 all 8' - they all came back 9's!

Not sure BGS is any better. I cracked a card and centering went from a 9.5 to an 8.

Seems to me, it's a 50/50 chance when cracking and resubmitting.

My experience is that all the tpg's are inconsistent with how they treat rough cuts, whether it's opc or regular topps. Sometimes they don't seem to punish a card for corner wear if it's consistent with the edge's cut (ie. if it's part of the rough cut and the wear isn't deeper than the rough cut) whereas other times they just seem to view them as touched corners and punish the card accordingly.
  • Thats awesome.

I have a 82 Ripken Traded that I initially sent to BGS. It came back as a trimmed. I didn't think for a moment that the card was trimmed. I then sent it to PSA and it came back a 9. Go figure.

Those "miscuts" really burn me up. I cracked a couple of 7's out that should have been 8's, they came back miscut. These are well centered cards. This was part of a 171 card submission that had 6 miscuts, all had borders all the way around, I did find one that was too big on one end, but the others all were square enough to fit in a holder.

I would love to hear from the PSA defenders how this can happen. Seems to me that PSA got swamped and labeled a bunch of cards as miscut to move the orders along.

Still think PSA is the best, but they are certainly not perfect.

I don't understand the MISCUT designation at all. I have received MISCUTs on cards that appear totally fine.

  • A miscut is when the card is so off center that there is no border on one edge. (Or if the player's name is underneath the border as in a caption, it is cut off.) You can see one extreme example here (not my card): Link

I've gotten a few MISCUTS on cards that don't bear any of those o/c characteristics.

Miscut is a factory cut error. They can be dead centered 50-50 all the way around front and back, and still be miscut. It is a dimond cut of the cardboard. You can tell when you put it up to a perfect 90 Degree angle. All corners should be 90 degrees. A miscut will have like 93 degrees and so on.
  • I pulled a very nice Topps Lemieux rookie card once and waited till the show to get it graded. I looked at it under a microscope and it looked like a 9 or possibly a 10 for sure. It came back a PSA 8. I cracked it and re-submitted it through the mail and it came back a 10...... If you feel the card is stronger than the grade you received then crack it re submit it or send it in for review. The bottom line is that humans make errors no matter what they do. It's all good.
