Have these cases been tampered with?

I'm needing some of you experts to give me an opinion here. Both of these cards look like crap 10's. Both of these cases have some frosting in limited areas. The frosting alone I might have dismissed, but coupled with how bad these cards look for 10's it got me wondering. I also realize that neither of these cards really seems to be in the dollar value to warrant tampering, but who knows. Both cards have a couple of areas of frosting that actually look worse with card in hand. The corner shots are to show how bad the cards are. Anyway, have these been tampered with, or did I just happen to buy a couple of bum "gem mint" cards from the same seller? Thanks in advance.

Those are some crappy 10s. Unfortunately the cases are fine. I have a few that came back with spot frost or whatever you want to call them
that's about 1/2 inch here and there just like the ones you've shown.

Didn't the first Ryan psa 10 sell for over 1G a few years back?
  • Don't be to sure. Those are some crappy looking 10's

As you stated, why anyone would want to mess with these 86 cards is beyond me.

PSA slabs are easily popped opened. most imes you can likely see the forced entry at one of the top corners of the slab.

On occassion though I have popped open PSA slabs so cleanly it would be almost impossible to tell they were breatched.

Then again it could just be bad inconsistant grading or they got preferred grading for some celebrity.

Thanks for the opinions. The responses are confirming. I figured they were most likely bum 10's but I've never had my hands on any like this. How could psa defend these grades? Absolute crap.

Could I send these to psa and ask wtf?

PSA does have a guarantee on their graded items so if you send the cards to them and the holders have not been tampered with, they
    will make good on it.

They have a guarantee, really? How do they make good on it?

    Edit: Nevermind, I found it

Something is not sitting well with me on that 5 card lot. I sub 86 Topps on a regular basis, and there is no way I would have even sent those in. My latest Ryan was a 9 and blows that 10 out of the water.

If the cases are not tampered with and the cards are the grade, then it pisses me off that PSA let those become 10's. Do you realize how hard it is to land 10's in 1986 Topps, especially the stars?!?! I realize most see that as a junk set, but high grade versions are very hard to come by.

I agree completely! I have about 30 psa 10 cards from this set and haven't seen anything close to these. I've opened 2 rak cases and it would take me about 1 second to toss these aside. Psa is historically very tough on this set and I've seen 9's that appear flawless. The other 3 cards were okay but not fantastic. I just got that feeling that something wasn't right when I first examined the cards. It's really hard to imagine these getting a 10. I think I may send them to psa to find out if they are tampered or just POS 10's.

Those cases look fine. I spent a few hours down at PSA several months ago and had a very informative chat with a rep there about their holders and what to look for with tampering. While it is always possible someone out there can breach a slab AND buff out the telltale frosting, I can't imagine such effort being put into 86T. If this was the first or second Nolan 10, perhaps. Anyways the frosting shown there is no problem; I have had cards reholdered at PSA and put in my hand with far more frosting right off the press.

All that said: WHAT THE HECK with that corner wear? Wish I had that grader!
  • Just more crappy grading.
  • Under that type of magnification, would any card look like a 10? I mean that is up close and personal!

I hear what you're saying and agree, but it jumped out at me immediately upon looking at the cards, especially that Rose bottom right. It's probably a bit unfair to blow it up to 1000X, but trust me it's all visible to the naked eye.

You can see the edge wear in the auction listing. Looks like the card was shaken and damaged the edges.

The first one went for $2600

I believe they now go for around $600
I am working on the Nolan Ryan master set. Need 1004 more cards to complete. I might actually spend more on plastic than I did on cardboard.
