Selling ungraded cards on eBay

How descriptive do you get when selling raw cards? I see some people put a lot of detail in the description and others just put up a picture. I just put up a bunch of raw cards and tried to be detailed in my description since there are a lot of buyers who expect mint cards when they buy raw. Am I wasting my time by putting in the description or is it par for the course? I figure it takes a few minutes per listing, and those minutes add up fast.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

  • As a buyer, I think it is very important to have as much information as possible in your item description. Many defects do not show up in a scan, I don't care how good the scan is. The problem though, is that your description and my description of a card can differ. I don't buy much raw now, but when I did, I would always look for a seller that was more critical of his description and try to stay with that seller as much as possible.

So if you just want to unload some cards and don't care about repeat business, no description, but if you are trying to build a sucsessful business with clientele, I would spill my guts!image

I provide good scans and just state the exceptions...for instance my description might be...slight corner wear per attached pic, no other issues noted.

It is quick to do and to the point...gives buyer a sense that you have looked at the card and can be comfortable without taking a bunch of time.

Make sure to provide a scan of the back of the card. My first and olny negative was from selling a $12.00 raw card and I did not provide a scan of the back. The buyer said the back of the card was to far off center.

    Good luck!

A high resolution scan of the front and back and an accurately assigned grade works best... I think that superfluous adjectives tend to raise red flags...

I usually just provide a giant scan of the card, and list anything about it that can't be seen in the scan. I just listed two cards that I got back from PSA N6 MinSizeRq (Murray OPC rookies), and I listed it WITH the PSA label so there are no mysteries. Not too many people are that honest about their PSA rejects, but I'd rather be honest than have a couple extra bucks.

Lest the newly formed PSA detective division gets your case, or on your case I should say.

I try to be as descriptive as possible. I am in the midst of getting a lot of my raw cards slabbed and selling many of my other raw cards. I just listed this lot yesterday (not spamming - just showing my example of describing). I even mention one card was a PSA 6 but I felt it was overgraded. Best to have people pleasantly surprised than feel they were taken.

I try to describe the card as fully as possible, however as someone has already noted you still will find buyers who are not happy with what they buy no matter what....that said here is an example of a description I have used:

You are bidding on the 1955 Bowman football Chester Ostrowski card in the scan. Card has one slight ding and some minor wax stains on back but card overal isn't bad. Nice card that would be a welcome addition to you collection. While browsing check out my other auctions for other cards displayed in the scans. Winners of multiple items receive discount on shipping. Thanks for looking and good luck.

Now I guess you could make a case that I didn't supply a scan of the back of the card on the listing ....... anyways if you offer return options then a ard shouldn't be a problem....
