AUCTION ALERT!! Fake card being sold as real!!

I have been building the 1933 Sport Kings set for some time now. Since then, I have learned what to look for in regards to spotting fakes, as they tried to make the reprints look as authentic as possible. Here is an auction where the seller was alerted his "estate find" was a fake, yet the auction continues to run! He is a Top Rated seller to boot!! I guess TRS doesn't mean squat anymore. Anyway, I didn't want anyone here to bid on this thinking they were getting a steal - the card is a fake and someone is about to get burned out of some big bucks!

The number one way to tell is to look at the back. See the big gap at the bottom of the card where the wording stops and the card ends?? That is HUGE compared to the real cards. A real Sport Kings card would be nowhere near as big.

The colors that should be solid lithography are pixelated.

It should be reported, unless the winning bidder wants a fake.

Well he does say "original from estate"

So I take a reprint, age it, put it in a plastic case and sell it for $300 plus. If questioned, tell people "what you see is what you get." If you can sleep at night is seems like a good business model.

Why would anyone buy a card of that pedigree ungraded from some who states clearly they are not card dealers?

    From the seller:

"Hi, what is fake about it, we have no reason to believe its fake, please advise, Les

The card is a definite fake. I have stated the main reason in one of the above posts. If the winning buyer wants to sub it to PSA, I am willing to bet $100 to their $1 that the card will NOT come back slabbed.

If this seller can't tell this fake from a real card, then he or she has no business selling this card as real. I am trying to give the benefit of the doubt to the seller, since they do have good feedback, but playing the ignorance card in this case is starting to look like willful ignorance.

My area of expertise is the Sport Kings series. I am not too familiar with the Goudey series. Maybe someone who is can chime is. My gut tells me "NO" however.....

This is a REAL Babe Ruth back. Compare it to the fake Babe Ruth back. That is my free lesson on how to spot a fake Sport Kings card!

    Response from the seller:

"Thanks for your info, we did look at the area where it would say reprint under 10x loupe, there is no sign of the word being removed and I feel that what I'm going to do is take it to a local card dealer and get some input, I'm just not seeing anything about this card that would make in not genuine, but I'm not an expert, thanks again for your help, Les"

The reprints don't say reprint. You have to notice the spacing. That is why I am educating everyone.

This one does. Big space on the bottom too.

The "older" reprints don't say reprint. The newer ones say "reprint". There are alot that don't say reprint - and those are older cards. I don't know when they were made, but it wasn't 1933. Bottom line, stay away from the huge spaced cards at the bottom and you should be fine, if you insist on buyting raw Sport Kings.

Why don't you guys just tell the seller that the little circle on the left is unreadable where it should say G G Co C 1933.
His fake is a big blur. The back of his card is also missing completed letters.

Here is an old Ty Cobb repprint, but unlike the Babe Ruth seller, this seller IS NOT trying to RIP PEOPLE OFF!!

I told him all of that. I told him the colors and registration were wrong, that the printing was wrong, that the spacing at the bottom was wrong, that the wear and "toning" was wrong, I sent him pictures of a PSA-graded example, front and rear, and I also told him that it looked like there was some intentional scuffing on the back bottom, which could indicate that someone tried to remove something like the word reprint.

Definitely looking like willful ignorance at this point.

    HA!

Due to possible centering issues, dunno if using the bottom space is an ideal way to spot a counterfeit. On the other hand, EEK's suggestion seems to be more on point, at least to me.

Reprint being sold as a reprint. I can understand what you are saying in regards to a card being legitimate, but OC causing the back to be off, but I have never seen that to be the case. The huge gap at the bottom is always a sure sign for me......

on the R338 Ruth, its an obvious reprint doctored to look old.... easiest way to tell is the left side of the red banner was cropped above the yellow background and is now missing most of the thin black line in this area, very common well known reprint... also the colors are too flush along the L&R borders where they meet the border.

on the R319 Ruth (link within post), its an obvious reprint doctored to look old... easiest of many ways to tell ... the top was cropped and is missing the yellow gap above the hat, the left edge was cropped and now the "G" in "GEORGE" is too close to border... also along the L&R edges the colors all are flush with the white border unlike authentic cards.
