    Very nice Rainbow!

I'm still trying to complete my rainbow for Big Frank from 1998!
Collector of most things Frank Thomas. www.BigHurtHOF.com
  • Just picked up the Printing Plate and the Mini today. Got the Tiffany last week. Ever since he's become Head coach at Tech I've been buying up Kliff cards at a crazy rate. Have 157 of 234 per the Beckett checklist. So yes this is Kingsbury collection...not a Romo one.

Nice cards. Question though, why do you collect cards of a 32 year old pitcher
with a career 44-44 W-L and a career ERA of 4.76? Do you know him personally
or is he related to you?

Not trying to be mean here, just really curious what got you started on
collecting his cards. Also, why is there a two year gap in his career stats?
He missed the 2008 and 2009 seasons. I don't follow Baseball anymore
and was just wondering what the story was on missing years.
  • I don't know....honestly.

I have a weird affinity with slightly overweight righthanded power pitchers with a propensity to give up the Home Run who pitch for the Rangers.... I really liked Rick Helling and Kevin Millwood before him. Part of it his story. High draft pick of the Rangers in 99. Got called up wild, young power pitcher. Had arm trouble, released by Texas, Detroit, Washington, Oakland, and Kansas City. That two year gap was spent in Japan where he led their league in Ks both years. He came back to Texas in 2010 and was a solid #2, #3 after they got Cliff Lee throughout the year.

His W-L stats even the past 3 years are horribly misleading. In 2010 he went 12-13, but had a 3.72 ERA, 201 IP, and 196 strikeouts. He got no run support. None. He also won the first home playoff game in Rangers History - Game 2 of the 2010 ALCS (yes we won our first playoff series in 2010 and we won it without winning a game at home), and actually all the home wins in 2010 playoffs he picked up - Game 6 vs. NYY he was masterful, 8 innings, 1 run, 3 hits, 7 Ks, and his 102nd and final pitch of the night - the worst swing I've ever seen Derek Jeter take to K him for the last out of the 8th. He was also great in Game 3 of the 2010 WS, Game 2 of the 2011 WS, and Game 6 of the 2011 WS. He should have got wins in all 3, but only went 1-0.

He was a lot more home run prone in 2011, which was due from decreased velocity to a degenerative hip condition. He's throws in the high 80s, low 90s now and if he gets his pitches up they get blasted. He had a game last year where literally the first 3 batters hit home runs off him in Baltimore. He was then perfect for 7 innings.

He is one of the few guys that still stops and signs autographs pre game. He'll have a conversation with you while doing so, he's very personable. He says the right things to the reporters, never seems too high or too low, when he's pitching great or getting beat around. He got hurt in mid June last year and will be out until May or so this year. The Rangers will need a 5th starter for 4 or 5 starts until he's ready. When asked about it he said, "I hope when I'm 100% I can help this team by making the staff somehow and not on the bench." He strikes me as a guy who if the 5th starter and everyone was pitching great, he wouldn't gripe about coming out of the bullpen.

    Sorry for the long read....

  • Neat story. Seems like a cool guy. Have become a big fan now. Going after printing plates. Wish me luck.

In all seriousness, no one could ever understand why I was such a big Ellis Burks fan. He just was very personable when I spoke with him a few times at the ball park, and he was so good when healthy. Saw him chase a huge rat out of CF in Fenway - thought that was cool. You know, important things like that... Plus a guy with speed in Boston in the 80s - how rare was that.
My favorite ball players throughout the years: Hank Aaron, Dale Murphy, Ellis Burks, Lance Berkman
