Better investment card 86 Fleer Jordan or 84 Star Jordan?

Which is a better investment long term(10+ years)?

Great points, ty. BTW just a little background, I started collecting comics at the age of 10 in 1981. Made the big mistake of selling them after a couple of years to start collecting cards. I collected cards until the late 80's, very early 90's when a lot of us got burned. I didn't collect seriously again until this year. Since getting back in I try to focus on retired ultra HOFers. I have picked up a 1955 Topps Ted Williams PSA 6($300, not bought as an investment giving to my Dad this X mas), a 1956 Topps Hank Aaron PSA 7($250), a 1958 Topps Jimmy Brown PSA 7($700) while a little high I couldn't find a nice, centered one for any less, and a 1969-70 Topps Lew Alcindor PSA 7 ($400). I am currently saving up for either a 1954 Topps Aaron rookie PSA6 or a graded Jordan rookie.

I am still a collector and love pulling them out and looking at them but this time around I have decided to accurately account for all my purchases to really see how well I can do from an investment aspect too.

Man how I love the Star card. But until PSA starts grading it (again), there will be a ceiling on it. If PSA steps up, it'll take a fat jump.

Used to love the Star unopened bags. Bought it whenever I saw it. Then of course it became way too easy to forge

I always wondered why PSA doesn't grade the bags or at least the individual cards. Have they ever give a reason?

They used to but then stopped. I do find it odd now because BGS does, and so clearly they must feel they can spot fakes. If they are confident enough to stake their brand to that, and the knowledge to do so exists, makes sense PSA could do the same? Such a key card in the hobby to not have in a PSA holder. Wonder where that one would go if PSA graded it, and how it would impact the market on the fleer if at all. No doubt it would be a new desirable option and to most resources are finite.
  • Fleer is the better investment because it has always been widely considered his RC. It is likely a much easier card to sell.

That said, the Star is way more scarce and with BGS grading the Star Co cards there is tremendous upside to it. If PSA starts grading them again there will be a lot more interest and with such limited supply I could see it making a nice jump in price.

Both are great. Fleer is safer but the Star is the true RC in my opinion. That said, I did purchase a Fleer before i picked up my Star.
  • Why not get a bunch of BGS Star non-XRC's still before fleer and not the best picture on the XRC IMO.

I'd definitely go with the Star Jordan.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

if PSA ever does decide 2 grade...the Star would be hands down.
    and it would skyrocket.

but the fleer is recognized as his rc and more affordable.......

    I have a csa 10 2nd year jordan.
csa was spot on way back then.

    Fleer is the best investment.

Until all of the bodies are found, Star Basketball will always have a cloud over them. It is too bad since it is the first true RC of many HOF players.

So far we have 2 votes Fleer and 1 vote Star, MattC and Jay0791 seem to be like me and still unsure which route to take and I understand why.

It's too bad so many people have been playing the flip game that we really can't get accurate pop numbers.

While I agree that would be a nice investment it's not really the route I can take right now.

You did mention a good point about the actual pictures and imho the action shot in the Fleer card is a damn good pic.

Love the points but I still am unsure on your pick. So you have no choice but to sell one within the next month, and hold one for 10 years, which do you sell?

  • Well, the Star is hundreds of times rarer, but people are afraid of it.

The Fleer card is readily available, there are thousands out there.

Neither is a particularly good investment in my opinion.

Anyone who wants either already has one, or can get it easily
if they are willing to spend the money.

My vote is the 84 Star rookie. Here is my commentary reposted from the BST board conversation we had:

Crap shot right now. If PSA were to start grading the Star cards that would be the high flyer. Right now with only BGS slabbing the Star card, most people focus on the Fleer.

1986 Fleer PSA 8's are selling for about $700 to $900

1984 Star BGS 8's are selling for about $1,800 to $2,100

So I think the premium in the Star cards are factored in but which grows (or maintains) value for the long term will largely depend on what PSA does. If PSA starts grading them again I expect the Star cards to explode. If not I think they will move about the same.

There is currently one PSA 8 on ebay with an asking price of $3,189 84 Star Jordan PSA 8 on eBay link

I am assuming BGS does not grade the team set bags then?

BGS graded the team bags for one person - I cannot remember his name but he was the only person. He was a major star buyer/distributor in the beginning from what I remember. Otherwise, they do not grade the team bags. GAI and SCD graded the bags. Star cards in original SCD holders were very conservatively graded. I have bumped a few SCD cards to BGS.

  • Which one is more iconic? The 1951 Bowman Mickey Mantle or the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle? The Jordan Star and Fleer will follow suit IF PSA decides to regrade them. The issue is with the possibe reprinting of the Star cards. I wont get into that though.

I understand the comparison (and personally think the Topps Mantle is inflated and the Bowman is a better investment) but I see the Jordan RC situation differently. The Star card isn't exactly a pack pulled highly available card. I like how Beckett classifies it as a XRC. It's a important card and I think has by far the better investment potential, but I think the Fleer should retain the RC while the Star gets the XRC. The Mantle 1951 is without a doubt his only real RC.
