My Trip To The National.......Two Weeks Late

I am just getting around to posting about my trip to the National. Mainly because I was waiting on my box from Steve which arrived today. I arrived on Thursday and left on Sunday morning. I think my two favorite things were meeting Barry Larkin and all the guys from the board. It was pleasure meeting some many guys that I had only communicated with here on the boards. I hung out with Mike (miconlegacy), Mike (CpaMike), Matt (Mbmiller), Bobby (Bporter), Eric (thoseback pages), Nathan (1980scollector), Dan (thunderdan), Mike, (mkenz), Tyler (DTY), Dustin (doublestriker), Doug (dcanfield) and Kirk (mrmint). Just an absolute great time and was happy to put a face with a name. Made some really good friends. Everyone was even nicer than expected. Also thanks to Bobby for the Reds/Pirates scorecard and CpaMike for the Reds cellos. I really do appreciate it. Mike (miconlegacy) thanks for all the patron.

Went to a Nationals/Phillies game in DC with Mike (miconlegacy) and Mike (CpaMike) & his wife Pam. Awesome seats, 21 rows up in front of the first base bag. Cole Hamels pitched for the Phillies. Adam LaRoche hit a dinger and saw Bryce Harper nail someone at home on a throw. He is a stud. The stadium was beautiful. The only bad thing about the game was it was 90 degrees, 100% humidity and no breeze. Sweated like long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. Thanks Mike (CpaMike) for getting the tickets.

The show was overwhelming. So many cards, such a selection and an awesome cross-section of stuff. It was also tough because you would find something you were thinking about buying, walk around and forget where it was. Hung out a ton at the BBCE booth. Was great watching Mike and Nathan tearing into 86 fleer basketball. Nathan started getting the cold sweats and shakes. Matt, Bobby, Dustin, Dan and Nathan busted 89 UD, 83 Topps BB, 81 Topps FB. Pulled a bunch of Montana, Griffey, Gwynn, Boggs and Sandberg rookies. Steve took time out to talk with all of us. Great guy. Steve had a ton of great stuff. He sold a 1954 Bowman wax box for $40K. That was awesome (wish I had that kind of pocket change).

Loved meeting Barry Larkin. I loved watching him over his career. He was a great guy and took time to take a picture with me. Also met Dwight Gooden. He was very humble and talked with everyone that came up to him. Mike and I met Goose Gossage in the elevator in the hotel. He was awesome to talk too and couldn't have been any nicer. You could tell though that he has a mean streak and wouldn't want to piss him off.

Also got about (20) NM raw 1959 topps for my set. Also got a case of 2008 Score Select FB for my girls and I to open. Lasted about two days. LOL.

I had an absolute blast and can't wait to see everyone again next year in Chicago. I may back off of the Patron next year. image

  • Mark, It was overwhelming! It was a pleasure to meet you and the other CU members there. You all made a stranger feel like family. By the way, other than the football box, did you buy anything without a Reds logo?

  • Being the reds fan that you are, meeting Larkin must have been awesome. Nice pick ups overall. Thanks for sharing your story/experience.

Yeah, but don't try getting a cello graded with one on. Highest grade will be a "4" or "5". And be careful if you try to take the sticker off! Tim, remember I tried doing that on a '65 cello last year? Put a damn hole right in the cello and had to open up the pack instead!
