Does PCGS grade planchet plaws as Genuine?

I didn't realize that a coin with a planchet flaw would be graded as Genuine by PCGS. I know that grading is a subjective business, but I don't agree with this particular piece.

They do have a specific Genuine code for Planchet Flaw, but I have seen quite a few coins with planchet flaws and defects in graded holders. For example, there's a Mexico pillar 8 Reales in the upcoming Heritage sale with a planchet defect not on the holder. Also, I have this 8 Reales in an AU58 holder with obvious planchet defects, so not sure what factors come into play when deciding a planchet flaw bodybag.

yes, it is pretty hit or miss with both major TPG's. I have, and have seen coins, with major planchet flaws graded, and coins with lesser flaws body bagged.

Yes, just got a bunhead penny back with a MINOR delamination in the field with no cleaning or associated problems that did not touch or harm the devices in a very well struck coin. I just think it is quite subjective and must be hard for them (the TPGs), although some - usually our own bits submitted - seem to be obviously good candidates for grading...

Have seen inconsistency in grading planchet flaws. Most of mine have received grades from both TPGs. If you look at 2K's piece as a benchmark, the coin on ebay should have been graded as well.

I can't say that I'm surprised ... Even amongst my small number of PCGS submissions - under 300 - I've seen a range of variances in grading. And many of my submissions were moderns, and many from the same 2-3 mints, so I don't think strike or dies were the cause.
