Double struck in collar with slight rotation between strikes. Most visible in the face (duh!) with confirmation on the arm/hand and the leg. Nice!

this is why i am so hard on people that re-strike/overstrike authentic USA coins. eventually enough time passes and the ripples of problems will reach far and wide, certainly not the biggest challenge we face in this life, but is quite annoying to be sure

Just looking at the excellent head detail on this coin I wouldn't think it would be a 65-S. But then again, they made so few 1865 Philly's there would have been little time
for such an error to occur.

Could it be that this TD was the pattern piece for a counterfeit die, and then the coin
was struck with the new die to check for verification of alignment?

I can be as creative as PCGS....lol

It bothers me that the doubling is so dramatic at the head only.

That is a creative guess. I wouldn't be surprised one bit.

It's a Philly. I am working on if it is a proof or business strike, not that it matters.

The early opinion is a proof but I have still not formulated an opinion.

I will post a picture when the sunlight is better.

How much light did you have?image and might I ask , how long did that take yah of study time to determine that fact? >>

I have not had ample time to study the coin under light and just sold a few proofs at Ana but still have a few of both to compare.

I also have the benifit of the gut call from some very well known people. I suspect it is not a proof on the surface but it also should be one.

So was the second head stamped independently of "STATES" which doesn't show as much doubling as the head even though it is near the head(s)?

    Arm and date too.

There is no question about if it's real only if it is a proof or business strike which I hope to have an opinion on soon.

Once again Realone wants to cause problems. Really Allen - you must have something better to do than dig up my old posts.

I guess you missed the article about the coin in the Gobrecht Journal.

    Realone

I would be very happy to but we both know that you really don't care about the dime but are just trying to attack me because I would not sell you a coin you wanted from me. I dont need your money and dont want it.

Your bully ways will not work on me and it is sad you feel this is the basis for making yourself happy. If other are interested in knowing about the coin I would be more than happy to scan and email a copy of this article to anyone who wants to know about this interesting coin after xmas.

No need to respond to your post in general or your pm's for which you have sent me over 200+ but it worth pointing out this is a 1865 dime not a 1863. if it was an 1863 it would mean only one die pair was used so the coin would have come from the same pair of dies.

My repost of the dime was an obvious tease to encourage people to attend the meeting. You should come along with anyone else who is interested in seated coins.

I just read this thread and do not get an answer? Doh. Realone seemed curious and not attacking. Others want to know also...
  • seateddimeseateddime Posts: 6,179 ✭✭✭
Aside from the article there remains no answer to offer as to the business strike or proof status. My opinion remains it was struck from proof dies.

There are 2 dies for this date. There is a key die scratch above the shield for a proof dies Awash stated was used for both and found on the rare metal turn example of this date. That coin is proof. Business strkes remain unconfirmed to date.

John McCloskey notes there is a possible overstrike of the date. The placement of the date may be altered as a result of the strike.

Beyond that, we will see you at FUN.
