Interesting 1944 Quarter with Two Struck in Wire / Staple Errors ....

Took a chance on an ebay error as the sellers photos and description were kinda funky. The ebay title said quarter error coin and the description only mentioned the raise rim. No mention of the struck in wires.

After deciphering the sellers photos, I decided that this was a real multiple error coin. I did see one scratch on the coin and another (what I thought was a die crack by the photo) turned out to be another scratch. Even tho the coin has scratches, it turn out to be a very interesting error coin.

The one struck in wire on the reverse looked fine to me but the other struck in wire on the obverse looked odd as it stood out from the rim. Upon closer study of the images I figured (right) that the wire stood out because of the partial collar strike which allowed the wire to stand out.

That's a very cool error with the retained strike-in which actually looks as it caused the partial collar.

I saw that one too. At first, thinking it was only one wire, I thought the wire went through the whole coin as it was exposed on opposite ends. What are the chances that two wires got in there at the same time? obviously a related or same event. You got a great deal and it's an amazing error on a silver issue to boot. I would have bid more but I knew I would hate those scratches. image
    Glad you got it.

GREAT PU! Those scratches are easily overlooked given the scarcity and desirability of the error. It is great when diligence pays off!!! image

    Thank you guys.

It is what it is and the scratches are part of the coin and most likely came from being stuck in a rolling machine ( because of the partial collar) and a worker use a tool to dislodge the stuck coin. These scratches are very common on error coins that are larger than the normal coin.

Even tho this coin wont grade (altho I have seen many "scratched" error coins in all three TPGs, so maybe it would grade) , it is a genuine rare error coin with a really neat triple error.

If error collectors had their own 'You Suck' category (really, think about it!) then this is surely deserving. image

  • Bummer PCGS won't grade that but it would have value in a PCGS Gen holder to allow future buyer to know a TPG thinks its real

    Nice!

It's fine raw ... I don't think the high expense of having PCGS slab it as an error ($50 plus s/i both ways) would add much value especially in a genuine holder. Plus, it's the kind of error that is more fun to view in hand.
