ANA 2012 Newps (aka veni vidi vici) [all 3 coins]

I picked this up today for a princely sum, and I am quite pleased. I saw this on the dealer's web site, but wasn't sure if I'd like it. I took one look at it and decided that it was worth getting if the price was right. In the image (below, from dealer website), the obverse seems a bit lifeless. In hand, the obverse is very lively, with nice peripheral colors that go along very nicely with the semi-satiny sheen caused by die polish lines. The reverse is similarly attractive. This coin has monster eye appeal, IMHO.

[BTW, I also bought two more Austrian talers, both with monster eye appeal, that I have yet to image.]

I have not yet even done auction lot viewing; I am tapped out and maybe should forego the auction (unless something goes low).

UPDATE: see follow up post in this thread (by me) for images of all 3 coins.

A princely sum, perhaps, but that is one very regal coin.

As I've said many times before, if I had deeper pockets, I'd be very susceptible indeed to Thalermania. (Or Talermania, depending on your preferred spelling.)

Now there's the avatar we know and love image

EVillageProwler, great newp! Isn't it amazing how different some coins look in hand vs. on computer?! This one already looks great on my screen so I can only imagine what you're seeing in front of you.

Looking forward to photos of those other two ~Nick

Here are images of all 3 coins (done by a board member who regularly images for lite-side folks).

    1. 1603 Austria Hall Dav-3005 MS64. Fantastic satiny luster on both sides, which didn't come through at all on the obverse. Monster eye appeal (which you cannot tell because the coin is too "busy", like a imaging a Lafayette dollar).

    image

    2. 1627 Austria Hall Dav-3337 MS65. As with the previous image, the semi-satiny luster (from die polish lines) didn't come out at all. And in hand, the coin does not look so "stained". Also with monster eye appeal. One thing interesting about this coin is that you can see the metal fatigue, particularly on the forehead and cheek.

    3. 1707 Austria Hall Dav-1018 MS64. Semi-PL, but the planchet and coin details had too much going on that it's too hard to properly bring out the luster as well as the delicate colors mixed in with the old-time patina. Again, with monster eye appeal.

Amazing coins- especially the last one- look at the detail, the fields and how well struck this example is- presentation piece? Well, probably not, but it truly is the best example I have seen

I love 'em all, but the reverse peripheral toning on the 1627 is especially nice.
