Anyone ever haggle with Fritsch Cards?

They have some nice 1970 Topps cello packs that have been on eBay for a long, long time. Just wondering if anyone has had success with approching them and asking for a deal.

They are a "sell at top dollar or don't sell at all" kind of organization. Larry ran it that way for years, and his son has continued that approach
    since Larry's passing.

They have been willing to discuss SMALL discounts when big dollars (5-figures and up) are on the table, but other than that I have never had
    much success with them.

Maybe I shouldn't bother then. They have a 1970 Topps cello pack with Willie Mays op top for $539. It's obviously overpriced or they wouldn't still have it. I think at 85% ($458) it may still be overpriced.

What Dave said. They may give you free shipping on it..maybe.

I've actually gotten 15-20% off of smaller orders ($100 or so) dealing with them directly, off of eBay.

    On 1970s unopened material?????

They rightfully/wrongfully act like they have us all by the short and curlies on 70s unopened stuff. I have never
seen any flexibility other than their "sale" prices in their catalog where they limit the quantities (and it's still no
    bargain even then).

I've had ZERO luck getting them to budge. Well, that's not true. When they were running a 10% off on their site, I offered them a great offer on a cello they had on Ebay that was roughly equal to going through the site - no dice...

I have a couple of questions.
First - isn't it usually a good indicator on the quality of cards in a cello pack by seeing if the first card is centered well or not?

The Mays centering makes me think it's not a good pack

Second - where is the haggle when Fritsch has his listings as BIN with no BO?

It's not as if there are a plethora of other places you can get 1970 cellos. Overpriced, yes. Available, yes.

The overpricing factor is not crazy money -- and I don't think they have any incentive to negotiate down. They don't need the money, and they probably enjoy having some marquee inventory.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

That Mays pack has a Chico Ruiz on the back. Of three packs I have opened with Ruiz, Rose has been in front of it. Rose, then Ruiz.

Well no, but I would doubt that qualifies for a $100 order unless you were talking about stuff that folks aren't clamoring over. I'm assuming the OP is talking about a several hundred dollar order.

I am speaking just of the Mays cello. The centering wouldn't bother me as I'd have no intention of opening the pack anyway.

I have not opened too many cellos from this era but in the ones I have, there hasn't really been much correlation between the centering on the top cards and
the cards behind it. I opened a 73 jumbo cello just recently and the top card was perfectly centered and the second card was miscut.

As to the pricing of these packs--I recall about 10 years ago you couldn't touch a raw jumbo cello for less than $500. The influx of all those fake "grocery"
cellos permanently and negatively impacted the perceived value of the legit 70s cellos, imo.

Almost impossible for them to budge. In fact, about 5 or 6 years ago, I was buying 1980 Laughlin sets from them because they put them up for sale one at a time. About every to every other set I bought, they bumped the price and then I stopped buying. I even emailed them about it and offered an older price for 10 sets at once.....you guessed it, they would not discount.
  • Sometimes they have ads/coupons in their catalogs, a certain percent off anything they sell (I think with some exceptions).

It seems like they don't have much incentive to negotiate down, because they can just bring out another cello, or another vending box. And they think people will pay the first price. If you have a supply like they do, I guess you can afford to be high.
