Great flea market find =]

While at work I get a call from my father (a flea market regular and clueless about cards) telling me about some baseball cards he stumbled across. Two binders FILLED with cards my dad says. The dealer claims there are 1000+ cards in each and is looking for $250 per binder. I tell my dad I wasn't interested until he started describing the cards, "about 30 or so have a TV set border, a bunch say 1960 rookie star or 1959 sporting news." I say what the heck, offer $200 and I'll pay you back. My dad buys one of the albums and gets the dealers number (he didn't have enough cash for both).

After work I pick up the binder and was pleasantly surprised. 1000+ cards all from 1952-1961 with no stars.

After looking through the binder I decide to call the man to meet him tomorrow to check out the other!

Here is the breakdown:

1952 Bowman 5
1953 Bowman 8
1954 Bowman 10
1954 Topps 17
1955 Bowman 35
1958 Topps 150
1959 Topps 150
1960 Topps 180
1961 Topps 450+

They grade mostly VG-EX but many are a bit better. All in all well worth the $200 =]

How can you go wrong for 20 cents per card. Good luck with the other binder.

Nice Pickup but it looks like they put the oversized Bowmans and Topps into 9 pocket sheets which probably has caused them some damage. I think you can make your money back on this one especially if there are some stars srpinkled in.
I am on a budget and I am not afraid to use it!!

Was the guy a card dealer? It looks like one of those Storage Wars type find from someone's left over inventory. At minimum, a VG-EX lot that size of '61 Topps would probably cover your investment alone. Lots more profit potential by breaking things into smaller lots. Nice score. That was definitely a steal.

WOW - what a great dad to notice that and let you know about it before it was too late.

    Great score!!

Oh man....great find! I love the look of "handled" cards. If those were mine, I would leave them just like they are but I would transplant them into an older beat up binder. Great score for sure.

Well done sir!! That is a winner!
    Cool lot
You could probably flip that bider as is on ebay for 500+ and get the other bider at no cost then easy. With some extra cash in poket as well! And take your dad out for steaks.
    Nice deal!

Okay guys, I met with this man to buy the second binder. To my surprise it wasn't a binder at all, but a box! He said over the phone yesterday that there were probably a little less than 1000 cards, all from the 60's.

I think he had a few more than 1000 cards image

By my rough count there are around:

    300+ 1961 Topps
    100+ 1962/63 Topps
    400+ 1964 Topps
    300+ 1965 Topps
    200+ 1966 Topps
    100+ 1967 Topps
    100- 1968 Topps
    50+ 1969 Topps

There are a few stars, team cards and a bunch of high #'s. The average grade is a lot better than the binder!

Yes! I got the box for $200 like the binder, and yes, I will most likely sell the majority of these. I might start a few sets though with the extras!

After filling a few want lists and helping a couple CU members, I decided to list the cards by set. Right now I have 1952-1961 listed and will tackle 62-69 sometime this week. I think I did a decent job displaying the cards and hopefully they'll do well.

I like the 1956 Topps box! Very cool, did you notice you have it for auction and in your store BIN?

The second group of cards end tonight and man are they doing great! Honestly, they are in fabulous condition (especially the 64's). It looks like when everything is said and done I will have pulled in over $2000! I kept the 1966 Topps to start a set and picked out 4 or 5 1964 Topps cards that I might sub in hopes for 9's but everything else has been listed. I think it's time for me to take my dad out to lunch!

Congrats on the big payout. And definitely take your dad out for a nice steak dinner and a beer and enjoy time with him. My dad would also look out for me in the same way when he came across something. Wish he was still around (he passed away a few years back).
  • Mind if I give your dad my phone number for the next flea market find? What a great guy!

What a great way to spend some money and time on going through all of these cards. Enjoy!
