Finally-Staubach rookie card

I have been searching for a nicely centered Staubach for about a year now. I was planning to go to the National to pick one up but the wife was sick so I had to miss. She felt bad but I said no big deal I'll find one on eBay someday. I was searching around Sunday night and came across this one so I had to buy plus $300 less then Ricks image

Oriols it looks like the slight tilt is all I see, it looks like it should be 8.5 with the centering but who knows..
  • I think your right, it looks like a 9 to me.

I have some 8.5's that are not that well centered or tilted, so I don't think that's what is preventing a higher grade.

I think that's one of the most eye appealing Staubach rookies I have ever seen, again, congrats!

I barely even noticed the tilt. I could easily see it in a 9 holder. Unless theres a surface issue or something we cannot see.

Congratulations! That is one of the nicer Roger's Ive seen!

Growing up in the seventies Roger Staubach was EVERYTHING a football player should be to us as kids.

His cards along with all the other Cowboy greats was the reason we even collected cards as kids.

He was the Greatest Quarterback Ive ever seen and the memory of his heroic play has kept me in the hobby to this day.

Roger Staubach will always be, My greatest boyhood hero.

Congratulations again on such a fine card. One that should be in any football card collection.

    John

  • GREAT Pickup!

you didnt miss any at The National. There were no 8's (or 7s) in the room. (im looking for one, or possibly a 7) there was one 9 and it looked a little more oc then yours.

    Great pickup.

Thanks John, you know how long I have been hunting for a nice centered one. I second all your thoughts on Roger Staubach, he definately was one of the greats. My father was a huge Eagles fan and he hated Dallas but could never say anything bad about Roger Staubach, he just had the biggest respect for him as a player and a person.

Backpages, I would have been really pissed if I went and couldn't find a Staubach rookie. It really is one of the tuffest cards to find centered. I have a SGC 5.5 and Sgc 5 if interested pm me

I opted for a 5 over most of the others on Ebay when I bought mine, and even paid a lil more than I should've....just because of how it was centered. There were 6s, and 7s, but all seemed to be way OC. (typical) Mine even has a pretty prominent crease, that I didn't notice until I scanned it myself. Still proud to own it.image
  • Centering has always been an issue with the Roger Rookie. Timberwolf has decent centering indeed on that EX 5.
I had two very nice Roger Rookies both Psa 8's. After a long hard debate over which to keep I went with this one.

The other one was very nice as well with great centering and I sold it for $700 back in 2004.

  • I would also highly suggest picking up all of the Roger Staubach cards from his rookie year.

I truely believe had it not been for those peskey "Over the Hill" Redskins, that Cowboy team would have beat that 72 Dolphin Team a second time to
repeat as Super Bowl champs. They just matched up so much better than the Redskins did against that Dolphin Team.

    Beautiful card scottie.

Here's mine. Acquired the fall of 1989 in eighth grade from my friend Jason. I gave him about $80(I remember one of the items was an 88 Fleer factory set) in trade in baseball for all of his football which included a group of 1972's including this one. It was a huge trade in my early collecting career. I remember this card was "old" to me then, although at the time it was only 17 years old. More time has passed with this card in my collection than years old it was at the time. How crazy is that! It was also the first card I had graded when I got back into the hobby.
