Very very newp that I can't wait to get!

I've been on the currency side a lot lately because that's an interest of mine that's picked up over the past few months. Also, I've recently gone through some life changes that I thought might require some adjustments to my spending, but guess what? Those were resolved, and now I'm back on the collecting train! So, instead of selling off some of my nice Mexican pieces, I get to buy more, which leads me to this:

Teletrade Auction

I've been watching this since it came up on Teletrade, and I was certain it would go for more than this. I've seen where this coin came up in a Stacks Bowers auction in 2010 (graded AU) for $126.00, but I haven't seen any recent Ebay listings for this coin, and think that it is now scarcer than it may have been a few years back (and worth more, given that was close to the height of the financial downturn). Anyone think I overpaid? I don't really care if I did, I guess. It's outside of my declared field of collecting, but I couldn't resist. I'll post pics of this mushy XF when I have it in hand.

Not sure what the going rate is for these but it's a classic design. I've heard coins look better in hand compared to Teleteade pictures, I just wish Teletrade would allow overseas bidders. Hard coin to grade as it is weakly struck in the centre but a nice large silver coin. Congrats.
  • I'm not sure the rate either, but I know Resplandores lists this year and mintmaster combination as being "Scarce", but with most coins being in F to weak VF. I have reason to believe, then, that XF 40 and above would be considered worth a premium. I don't ever trust Krause on these, but I'm developing my own price guidelines. I've bought 3 scarce pieces now, and have paid between $60 to now $150. This sort of overlaps, because I've bought a common piece for $65, and a Very Scarce piece for $100.00 before. I'm only using Dunigan and Parker's classifications for rarity, too, which may have changed.

One of our resident 8R collectors should be able to step in and comment. I'm out of my league here.

tewcd - I think you will like that one. Nice for the grade.

I don't think you overpaid at all.

XF40 may turn out to be somewhat optimistic, even given the worn dies, but still a decent coin for the price.

I'm on the fence about the grade. Hard to judge with that soft strike and worn dies, but you are probably right about it being a bit optimistic. My exposure to this series is limited to the counterfeits I was collecting earlier in my numismatic years, but can tell you that I haven't seen too many AU examples of early Guadalajara, so I also think you did well with this one.

I see it's already on ebay for $160 along with your "gently used" copy of Resplandores.

    That was fast....

    Won't a $160 BIN cost $17.50 in fees? I don't get it.

Not really sure I have to explain my practices. If my prices are fair, then that's that.

I'm allowed to make whiplash-inducing decisions about the direction I want my collection to go. :-)

I decided to list it at a small loss to attract a quicker sale. I don't think the market on Ebay would go for what I paid for it. Also, it's about the same loss I would take had I shipped it off to Teletrade as a return. This way, at least, I get to take a tax deduction for a net loss.
