Let a White Whale swim away at the National :(

So i was walking around, not really looking for anything specific, and saw couple of guys that had some pretty high end psa/dna signed rookie cards. Included was a really nice 1980 Magic/Bird/Dr. J Topps card. I've always been super intrigued by getting one of these but wasn't even thinking about and focused on other things. I looked at it, thought the price was fair, and decided to walk around and think about it.

Literally walked around for 10 minutes total, go back to the table to buy it...and it sold. It was Saturday at like noon, so the cards been there for 2 days and in the 10 minutes i'm waffling, it gets sold. Saw one other example at the show...but for $500 more.

Too bad it was gone ... but eventually another will show up ... at a price you are willing to pay.

Sorry to hear..I got bit and pulled under by a whale...Found a 81 topps montana signed on Wednesday and talked him down to 150(wanted to pay 125) kept going back and paid the 150...30 minutes later Dustin calls me and found another one for 130(so I talked the dealer down to 120) and now have 2 signed Montana rookies.

ha, now you have 2 Montana signed RCs. There could be worse problems image

yep, not worried about none showing up as this isn't a super rare 1911 card like some of you collect, or topps test issues. What made this one so nice was the signatures were super clean and really parallel instead of on a slant. I'm thinking about how much it would cost to put this card together myself. Does Bird and Magic sign much at shows these days?

Out of curiousity, what was the 1981 Bird/Magic/Erving card priced at that sold? (I realize you might not know what the actual sale price was, but you probably know what the asking price was)

    Thanks,

they told me a price of $900, and when i asked what they actually sold it at they said $900.

saw another that was 14 or 1500 which i walked away from without worrying about countering since we were so far apart.

just do the card yourself... more fun that way. I've gotten Bird and Magic both done on the card and only need to Dr. J - the card plus the 2 sigs and I probably am only into the card for around $175ish.

Believe me, I know your pain!

Back in the mid-1980s, I was at a show in Atlanta GA. I walked in and right off the bat, I found a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle for $250. I think it was at (Uncle) Dick DeCourcey's table, but I might be wrong about that. Anyway, after looking it, I thought I better look around the show to see if anything else hit a stronger buying nerve. After a few minutes, I went back to the table to buy the card. I got about 10 feet away from the table, and noticed the card was out of the display case, and a woman was reaching into her purse for the money. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed image

It took me a loooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggggggg time (almost 20 years), and quite a bit more money to get over it, but I finally picked up a PSA 3 on ebay back in 2004.

Who was the dealer? Do you have a card? I need to make some connections with signed card dealers with good 60's and 70's stuff. It's the only way I'll ever finish some of these sets.
