Which way do you lean... Off-Centered Cards * POLL *

What's your preference when purchasing off-centered cards? I'm not talking about the cards that receive the coveted OC designator, but cards that are within the "acceptable" range for the grade. I've noticed that I prefer cards to be a little larger on the left if they aren't 50/50... what's your preference?

So l-r centering is less important to you than t-b centering?

I agree, larger on the bottom is preferable.

I really think it depends on the year, especially with Topps cards from the 50s and 60s.

o/c, L-R even at 60-40, is visually jarring and more so if the %age is greater, than 60-40 T-B. Preferable to have the wider border at the bottom than at the top.

I agree. It's all about eye appeal. Some decently centered cards look more O/C than they really are and others that are OC appear less so depending on the card design and optical effects.
  • In general, the o/c cards that I find least objectionable are 50/50 side to side, and have more top border than bottom.

The fifth Brett looks perfectly centered.

Of the other four, I would prefer #4, which has the larger bottom. To me, larger bottoms almost looks designed to be that way (ie 1954 Topps).

I have also found that PSA is more partial to cards centered high as opposed to those centered low.

Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.
  • I much rather take a card with top and bottom centering issues than a card with left and right issues. They just have more eye appeal IMO.
