Photos by request: Aluminum bar (solid) 9x1x2"

LochNESSLochNESS Posts: 4,829 ✭✭✭
Edited to add: For those who requested photos, they are now below. Sorry for the delay I was in Cleveland all weekend. If you're not interested please keep calm and carry on image ~Nick

Didn't see a BST board for metals ... My friend used to apprentice for a local blacksmith (I'm serious!) and after he quit, he moved and left me with a solid bar of Al amongst other possessions he didn't want to carry on the plane.

Any thoughts? It's ~9" long x 1" thick x 2" wide. PM if you want it.

Aluminum is NOT a precious metal. Try e-Bay or your local scrap yard if no one here has any interest.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I know it's not precious - never said it was - just didn't see the BST forum for some reason.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. No hard feelings OK? Just trying to unload a bar.

What type of aluminum? I.e., what kind of alloy, or if pure, how pure is it?

I'll take the $5 bill for $4.50. Throw in the bar and I'll do $5. image

Sorry, couldn't resist...since it's on the wrong forum anyway.

I don't see any markings in the pics of that bar. It may not be pure aluminum and an assay may cost more than the bar is worth. It would make a neat door stop or paper weight though.

How about this block of aluminum? This shows the results of some hyper-velocity impact testing.
Target: 4" thick block of 100% aluminum
    Projectile: 1" diameter Lexan cylinder
    Velocity: 7 km/s
    Result:

Don't know, but as stated in OP it was leftover from a blacksmith shop (or so I was told) so never assayed or stamped. You are likely right about the value in having that done.

Oh and BTW, you guys are really funny image I've been image for two minutes! image

Aluminum bar stock is relatively inexpensive and widely available. It's normally sold in 10 to 12 foot lengths. A remnant like that would have negligible industrial value. I used to obtain larger remnants of 7075-T6 aircraft aluminum for free when I was in graduate school and was learning to operate machine tools.

That was probably the most helpful and informative response, thank you! I'm actually starting to doubt that it's Al, because of the weight, but if my local metal shop confirms it is in fact Al then I already have a board member in-line to receive it image

Just glad to know that this thing which has been squatting on my cabinet for months will finally have a home.
