Raw submission - grades in!

Good overall submission. A few of the coins are needed additions to my registry sets. I am still rather disappointed with myself for ruining the 1796. Ran a q-tip over a problem area after an acetone soak and must've done it harder than I thought, because it hairlined the area where the spot was. Not surprised PCGS refused to grade it because of that spot.

1794 from Craig Keplinger with a small strike through - AU58
1807 from Harlan J Berk, also with a small wire strike through - AU58
1809 HJ/TH from Marti Hervera - AU58
1811 HJ cracked out from an NGC AU53 holder - AU53
1796 from Aureo - bodybag for cleaning

I'll post some pictures when I'm home of the coins I imaged before submitting and the rest when I get them back.

WOW those are great grades for such old coins! image

My dad always said he'd take an AU58 over an MS60-62 any day of the week because the history is richer (circulated vs uncirculated in a drawer or safe box) and the eye appeal is often superior.

Thanks, Jeff. I'm still kicking myself for ruining the 1796. First time since I started collecting.

Here's what it looked like before acetone. The spots on the reverse near "IND" is what I was using the q-tip on.

Hey Jae. Mostly varieties, but also a scarcer 1810 TH date:

    1809/8 TH
    1810 HJ
    1810 TH
    1810 HJ/TH
    1811 HJ/TH.

You were robbed on that 1807. MS62 all day IMO.

Did you at least get a genuine slab for the 1796?
I've seen my fair share of hairlined coins in slabs, what makes this different?

That 1807 wouldn't look out of place in an MS slab, but I fully expected an AU grade from PCGS.

I didn't get the 1796 detail graded and slabbed because i would crack it out to go ATS anyway. I think what made the difference is how localized the hairlines are on this coin. It is an obvious cleaning spot.

By the way, just checked the submission and see that Phil imaged these for CoinFacts (even the bodybag). I like his images, but he is using much warmer light that can hide some minor hairlines. For example, the 1796 cleaned spot doesn't look cleaned in the image.

Nice coins, nice images, a few with excellent portraits that look undergraded to me, but what do I know?

Roman, I don't want to twist the knife image, but the small spots on the 1796 weren't distracting at all because of where they were. Don't sweat it, practically every single collector gets fixated at a small flaw at times, that is in fact much less serious than they think it is. It has certainly happened to me. I am however puzzled by the 2 parallel lines that run across the obverse of that coin, from 12 to 4 o'clock.

    Hi Dimitri,

It's comforting to hear that i'm not the only one sometimes getting fixated on things that are just silly to be fixated on image

I believe the 2 parallel lines running through the obverse are the result of something being stuck to the rollers when the silver was being rolled-out before punching out the blanks. If i'm not mistaken, the term is "roller marks". These lines are parallel and run through the entire length of the coin. You can't see it well on the image, but the lines go from over the dentils on both sides. In fact, if these are roller marks, the lines could be potentially going the entire length of the silver sheet with other blanks being affected.
