More ancient Greek newps

Except for the last two (The Seleucid @ $70-something and the Teos griffin @ $100), these were all pretty cheap. Less than 20 bucks each for the bronze and only $28 for the Miletos lion, which I think was a steal. I probably would have paid three times that.

I previously posted the Teos griffin and the Seleukid piece.

The rest are coming in a trade from Germany. All four of those for 39 bucks plus about 50 bucks worth of fossil shark teeth. I had next to nothing invested in the fossils since I'm so close to the source- they were found just a mile up the road from me. My German swap partner seems to have assigned very modest trade values to these coins. The archaic Miletos lion piece looks better than several others I've seen on VCoins in the $100-150 range, and he assigned it a mere $28 swap value.

Of course these are all relatively small coins, but I picked them for the designs and/or patina.

Now I begin learning to attribute and catalog Greek coins. It will be a steep curve for me, but should be fun.

The pictures aren't too small, are they? Being a terrible photographer, I'm often forced to recycle previous sellers' pictures. But I'm also a stickler for consistency, and having a bunch of images of different size drove me nuts. Most sellers don't use images as large as my old 800x400 format, so I'm adopting a smaller 400x200 format. (I can usually downsize a little without losing much detail, but enlarging smaller pictures to match a larger standard often results in some blurring.)

I was just wondering what the cutoff date is to be an "ancient" ??? Is there an official date?

I have a Russian wire kopek that's over 1k years old, wondering if it's an "ancient"

No, there's no set date. Some Dark Age British and European coins from before 1000 AD are considered "medieval", while some Byzantine coins from as late as the 1400s are considered "ancient". It's one of those rather nebulous terms (like "Byzantine" itself).

I didn't know they made Russian wire money before the 1500s. If you want to call it ancient, go right ahead. Before 1000 AD qualifies, I'd say. I used to use 1000 AD as an arbitrary dividing line in my own mind. But one could just as well argue that it is medieval.

Of course, there is no debate about all of the coins I posted above. They're all BC. 2,000+ years old qualifies as ancient any way you slice it. The two silvers- the Teos griffin (and I think maybe the Miletos lion as well) both date from less than 200 years after the very dawn of coinage.

Here again are the two newps that got away.

First, the Seleucid tetradrachm that I had in hand for about 48 hours before Aethelred twisted my arm REALLY hard and made me swap it to him. (He offered me a truly obscene trade advantage or it would never have happened, because that was my favorite- and most expensive- newp.)

At least I still have a Seleucid with the desert-patinated bronze above. That factored into my thinking.

And here is another that got away. It was an impulse eBay win and I liked it for the desert patina and the cool Helios counterstamp. Savoyspecial also liked the counterstamp, so I let him swap it away from me as part of the trade on a really cool pictorial love token that I'll put on my Holey Coin Vest (I'll probably post that on the Liteside when I have pix.)

No Darkside thread is complete without a joke about Wybrit or ajaan or Aethelred.
