My day at the National

Wow! So many vendors, so much stuff, so much walking on concrete floors! The show is awesome. I stopped by BBCE and met Steve and Reed. Steve said a bunch of the other CU forum folks had already stopped by.

I didn't actually buy a lot (one 1971 Topps Greatest Moments card, 2 boxes of 2012 Topps Minis at the Topps booth (hoping the promo cards will have some value and most likely leaving both boxes sealed) and my own little group pack rip from BBCE: 3 1980 Topps baseball packs, 3 1982 Topps baseball and 2 1981 Topps football. I was hoping the packs would yield either a Montana, Ripken or Henderson but was shut out on all fronts. Better luck next time.

Some of the stuff at this show was stunning. I saw the Black Swamp find at the PSA booth, a Roger Clemens Cy Young Award, Derek Jeter Gold Glove, countless PSA graded cards, many vintage complete sets (someone had a complete 1967 Venezuela Retirado set). Tons of autographed stuff as well - I was surprised to see so many PSA/DNA slabbed signed cards.

I can't wait for it to come back to Cleveland, since I am about 10 miles or so from the IX Center. Anyone know when it is scheduled back this way?

    Glad you had fun.

Sounds like the location in Baltimore is great compared to Chicago and Cleveland. There is virtually nothing in the area as far as entertainment unless you want to travel a decent distance in Chicago and Cleveland. I wish they would move the "Chicago" show from Rosemont to Chicago. I also wish they would get rid of the Cleveland show all together.

Organizers have been asked about a return of the National to the West Coast. For the last several years we have repeatedly spoken to authorities in Anaheim, site of the most successful National ever in 1991 and also the site of the National in 1996, 2000 and 2006. Similar to the situation in Baltimore, the Convention Center has a rigid policy which will not allow them to guarantee dates to us. Despite our past history, numerous meetings, phone calls and letters, Anaheim officials have been unable to provide the National with dates far enough in advance to allow adequate preparation and planning for the event. We will continue to look for a suitable West Coast site

I live 10 minutes from Anaheim and in 2000 and 2006 I was out of the card game, so I've never been to The National. Really want to go, but doesn't look like it will be back here anytime soon. May have to do a trip to Chicago next year with the family!

I would have to disagree with Fur72's assessment of the Chicago site. The Chicago site is great. Yes, it is at the Rosemont convention center, but the reality is you can get into the city with a short ride on the CTA. Once in the city, there are countless things to do and see, Cubs and Sox games, great restaurants, museums, and shopping for other family members. You and your son can check out the show, while wife and daughters can spend as much as you did at the American Girl Store.

If you enjoy family trips, Chicago is an ideal location. While most will stay at a hotel close to the convention center, if traveling with family, consider staying downtown leaving the family close to all the attractions and you can easily commute to the show. Feel free to PM if you need suggestions or have any questions.

    Mike,

I am not saying Chicago is a boring town. I try to get to Chicago every chance I can get (usually one weekend a month) and I live 3.5 hours away from downtown. I actually enjoy the convention being in Rosemont becasue its a quick in and out for me.

But for the people who travel who want to see the city its much easier to walk out of hotel on Michagan ave and see the city rather than grab a train or commute to the city or vise versa if staying downtown. I just think with 2 ballparks the convention would be much more exciting if it was in the actual downtown area.

I'm trying to talk my wife into a trip to Chicago for next years National. I only have one problem, my oldest will be turning 5 that weekend. She said it's not cool to go when it's his birthday.

I recall a thread some time ago in which it was illustrated why the National will never go to the West Coast.

I stayed downtown last year(1 block from Michigan Ave.) and it's a 50 minute ride on the CTA to get to the convention center. It's the next to last stop on one of the lines(blue, red??). I do agree that it's a good idea to stay downtown if you're taking the family. Lots for them to do there while you are at the show.
  • Well, come on! We have one of the largest coin shows several times every year in So. Cal at the Long Beach Convention Center. Why not have the national there?

Plus with the way Mike Trout is playing, it would be a good place to combine with a few games!

It is not a true "National" if it is always in Balt, Chicago, and Cleveland you know!
