National Report: Day 1

Thought I would post an update of the Baltimore National Sports Collectors Convention.....Day 1. Arrived via Delta from Detroit at noon. Caught the Light Rail from the airport to the Convention Center. A 20 minute trip that costs all of $1.60. My hotel is only a block from the Convention Center so it turned out great. Went over to the Center at 3:00 to get my VIP pass and suffered my first disappointment....they were sold out! Had to buy a daily pass for $20.00 but still got in at 4:00 for the 4-8 sneak peak. I have never not been able to get a VIP pass on the first day before and I have attended about a dozen Nationals. Some were saying it was due to the VIP freebies but I just find that hard to believe. The Convention Center is really nicely laid out and fairly modern. As usual, a vast array of material is there to see. Spent most of my time at a couple dealers I know that still sell high grade 1950's - 1960's baseball that isn't graded. Spent about $300 and got some really nice 1959 high numbers and some 1954's and 1955's. Stopped at the PSA booth and while checking out the display of the recent 1910 E98 find with its one PSA 10 and many 8's and 9's, ran into Joe Orlando. We talked for awhile and as many of you know he is a very nice guy and also helpful in getting questions answered. The look of those 1910 cards is amazing. The high grade samples have beautiful pure white borders. They looked like that were printed recently they were so clean.

I thought that today's Wednesday "sneak peak" crowd was about the biggest I have ever experienced for a first day. Witnessed a couple big dealer buys from individuals that came with ungraded sets to sell. At least they were big to me as $5,000-$6,000 in cash exchenged hands in a matter of minutes. The card company booths were packed and the PSA booth seemed backed up for most of the night. Tomorrow I will start working my way through the 25 aisles of dealers and these are lengthy aisles! I would guess there are well over 500 dealers with many having multiple tables. Should be fun day tomorrow.

Great video! Does anyone know if the 69 BB wax boxes in Steve's case were full of packs? If so, that's quite a haul right there!

Great video!! That Babe Ruth bat at the end... is that the same one that was rumored to have been stolen from the 2009 National in Cleveland? I always wondered if they ever found that bat.
