The 2012 National thread: post your cards, pictures, stories, etc

Since I won't be attending myself, I'm going to live vicariously through those of you fortunate enough to make the journey. I love hearing all of the stories, and most of all seeing the cards board members are able to find. Pictures are greatly encouraged. Thank you in advance for indulging the rest of us, and happy card hunting!

<< <i>Simmons tweeted today that he's sad he's missing the National this year, as he's currently in London. He's been since 2007 I believe. It would be nice if he sent a Grantland writer. >>
I'd rather see it skipped than have it handled by someone possibly who might not do it justice. When you read this annual article, it seems to me that Simmons "gets it" and understands the collecting mentality but still can find humor in it.

A couple of pick ups from an awesome time at the National. So many great cards there. Also picked up an 88-89 Fleer Basketball box from BBCE and pulled some nicely centered MJs and Rodmans. 6 Pippen RCs in the box and not a 10 candidate to be found.

Ironmanfan - I've always loved the grey Orioles jersey from the 80s. A classic jersey in my mind. What a cool display piece to have!

The best part of the trip was hanging with friends from the boards. I enjoyed meeting Andy(paleocards), Val(Nascar360), Eric(thosebackpages), Kirk(mrmint23), Logan(kingnascar), Jeff(orbitmarz), Matt(MBMiller25), Bobby(bpporter), Dustin(doublestriker), Mknez(mike he is taking the pic), and of course Shaggy. Also met mike (miconelegacy) and mark (cincyredlegs)--both great guys. Helluva good time with these gentlemen.
We got to meet Dwight Gooden, Barry Larkin, Rickey Henderson, and on my way out of town I said hello to Pete Rose and Joe Morgan who were just getting into a cab at the Marriott. I really wanted to speak with Rickey in 3rd person but resisted the urge.
I bought a few cards and ripped 3 boxes of 1983 topps at BBCE. I think there's a possible Gwynn and Boggs 10 among those I pulled, but we'll see. Not a big ripper, but when in Rome. People were ripping all over the place. I also ripped two 84 Donruss Racks. I bought a few cards that I'm super excited again, particularly the Robinson RC.
It was really cool to be in a place where most people share the same passion you do for cards. Some dealers/collectors are really fun to talk with, a few a douchebags, but they don't detract from the overall experience one iota. Also, way too many patron and fireball shots. I'm not 22 anymore.
If you haven't gone and you love cards--even if you don't buy anything, this makes for a really, really fun vacation.
83 Topps highlight rips. Card overall were pretty well centered
84 Donruss Racks. Pulled a Mattingly on rack #2. Not well centered but still really fun to pull that one out.
Picked up a few cards as well. The 2 (Reggie Jackson PSA 9 and Thurman Munson PSA 9) 1970 cards were from a fresh BBCE find last month in Montana. Most graded out 7s, 8s, and 9s. They had been in a binder all these years. Love the Brooks and Mickey cards as well and am thrilled with their condition and eye appeal.
Anyway, for those who didn't go, hope you enjoy a little taste of the National, and for those who did--great meeting you!

Thanks for sharing your results!
But the ripping made me queasy.

<< <i>I still can't believe what that PSA 5 1953 Topps Mick cost. Gotta be one of the top deals of the show. Can't wait to put it in my cabinet! >>
It will be in your hands on Friday! Too bad you had miss the National. That 52 was a damn steal also. We made out well. Hopefully the White Plains Show will have some fun scores.
thunderdan, I let out an audible whimper when I saw that Brooks. lol
Unfortunately I didn't get to attend the National this year, even though I was only about a half hour away from the Convention Center for the entire weekend. Originally I didn't have plans to attend at all since I have another vacation planned in Baltimore for the following weekend (family reunion), but my Uncle lost his four year battle with cancer last week, and his memorial service was held on Saturday (8/4) up in Joppa, Md. I spent every minute I had with my Family instead. I thought I might have a little time to spend there on Sunday, but I was too emotionally drained and my heart wasn't in it. I certainly enjoyed living vicariously through everyone's pictures and stories though. Here's to hoping I can make it to Chicago next year!
Dan - AMAZING pickups. ENJOY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
