Just got the grade back on my 1952 Superbird with Hand Engraved Tail Feathers....

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked this coin off eBay a few weeks ago for $25.

These are the sellers pictures;

In hand it turned out to be the very rare FS-902 Superbird with hand engraved tail feathers. I didn't think it would grade because of some spots and other issues. And if it did grade, I was thinking PR62, maybe 63 on a good day.

Here is the image I took;

Counting this one, PCGS has only graded three, one PR63 and two PR65's. Yep, it graded PR65! Not a bad $25 pick!

    It might be worthwhile to get a color shot for that that one.

    I have yet to see a quality photo comparison side by side of the ordinary tailfeathers and the re-engraved talfeathers.

    How much of a premium do you think there is for the FS-902 coin? Is a PR65 a $500 coin do you think?

    First Congrats on the Grade. Mine will make the pops go to three Proof 65's and as far as I know there has only been a couple more found. I believe these will be rarer than the 1953 Proof ETF, as far as guessing a price , mine is going into my Registry Set so to me its Priceless............Enjoy Tom image

    I have one, but need to send it in. It has been a summer of golf and travel and not much coins.. but I do need to get it graded. Perhaps this is the driver to get me to finally reup for submitting coins again.

    How much do the engraved feathers add to the normal Superbird value?

    It's hard to say. Get it into an auction where 2 or 3 buyers want it and it could go anywhere. With only about 6 out there, auction history is lacking.

    As with any new discovery the initial price it would go for is anybodys guess, None of these have been up for sale yet. For someone wanting to add this top pop to there registry my guess is a couple grand. Again this should be the rarer of the two. But its only a guess as to how many more of these will be found. Only 5 of the 1953 have been found with the highest price on those at over 3 grand. I am still searching for a example of the 57 D and have yet to find even ONE.................Who's gonna be the first? Congrats again on a great Pick. Enjoy tom image

    Utah, You Suck Bigtime!!

    I looked at that exact coin but completely missed it. To make matters worse, I then forgot to bid on this one, which I could actually see...

    That bottom image is such poor quality (grainy, overexposed to lighting) that it doesn't give me an adequate point of reference. Is there some smoking gun feature on the re-engraved variety that would explain this in simple terms?

    Thanks to UtahCoin's original thread, I learned about the hand engraved variety. A coin dealer friend of mine had an NGC PF67 with the hand engraved feathers. I encouraged him to send it for crossover.

    That "S" is so miniscule it would be easy to overlook unless specifically searching for it. It makes one wonder how many of these are sitting in proof sets that no one has bothered to check.
