How much CAN toning bring???

NotSureNotSure Posts: 2,980 ✭✭✭
I know toning can/does bring mad premiums at times, if it's clearly something really nice (I'm a blast white guy, but I've seen many wonderfully toned coins worthy of large premiums.....well, I wouldn't pay the premiums, no offense to those that do, and, if toners fall out of favor...... but anyway.... ). So, I was perusing TT and came across this coin. Does that particular toning really REALLY account for the extra $400....or is it simply the seller's 'reserve', thinking his/her coin should bring that kind of $$ for that kind of toning??? Granted, I've seen some wonderfully toned coins, but this, to me...I can't see this toning bringing that kind of $$.

What is the opinion of tose that like toners? Is this type of toning/color make the coin worth 10 times it's normal value??? Commemts??? Thanks, from a non-toner guy.
I'll come up with something.

I sold my avatar coin to my son for a whopping 66.50. I sold him also the sister toner (I am pretty sure I shared these with you when I first picked them up?) from the same mint set for an additional 66.50. He wanted to auction them off at HA with some coins I was selling. He was rewarded with my avatar coin bringing in over 650 dollars and the sister coin over 140 dollars. Both were 1956 MS65FBLs. Not bad for a small investment from Dad.

Honestly, I don't know what makes colorful coins desirable. I find coins with eye appeal...that most forum members here would turn their heads on. Can't answer any toning market premium questions. My son got lucky... or made a smart investment. image

I like toned coins, and have been known to pay a premium for them, but I don't really like the one in that photo....it would have to look a lot better, have booming luster, etc, for me to even think of wanting it.
I believe, for some folks though, that the green may be part of the allure. Also, for toners in general, some dates are not as known for having nice toning.....finding a coin with nice toning for one of those dates may be hard and the values bid would be higher, usually.

Think of Franklins and the later dates (non double pack mint sets).

For me, 10x value may mean nothing...if it is normally a low enough cost coin (ie....$2 goes to $20....I've easily done that before). Now, where I drop out at times, others continue to play.....

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

toning gives a coin individual character. Makes it a one-of-a-kind in a world of duplicates.
