What does everyone use to examine cards?

I was wondering what everyone uses to examine cards and where can i get it? As i m getting older i need reading glasses and it would help to have something to magnify more. Jewelers loupe? Magnify glass?

I've found regular eyesight works best as well as knowing what to look for as long as you have a reliable light source. In some situations, when I'll be examining greater quantities of cards, I may use readers (+1.50) and on very rare occasions a 10x loupe for specific details or to identify potential alterations.

How the card looks to the naked eye is a good start. When I want to examine closer, I have a 5X of one of these and it works well for corners and edges. Using a good light source is a really important part of card grading too in my opinion!

I've always used only my eyes and a good light source.
  • 10x loupe and good light is ideal. and i picked up a quality steel ruler with 1/32" spacing on it to measure - got caught once or twice on undersized cards after i bought them - so try and check now - at least before submitting.
