One dealer said it looked like a dropped B. What exactly is a dropped B?

    It is when a die filled letter falls from the die and gets struck into a coin.

    Ahhhh I see, so it's pressed into the coin making it incused not raised.
    In your example a G fell from the die, landed on the blank quarter planchet
    and was incused into the quarter, interesting. Thanks for the info.

    To me it looks like a defect in the planchet before the strike. There looks to be a raised lump of metal on the rim, and the rest of it may have been similarly raised before the strike, but the force of the die squashed it down. I don't think it's a dropped letter.
