1909 S VDB with PVC, advice?

KaelasdadKaelasdad Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭
Dont have my camera handy but I picked up a really EF plus Brown example, and it has a few globules of PVC around the date--I dont want a blue coin, but will acetone do anything to the color or just work on the PVC?

    Acetone should be fine.

Not sure that acetone and copper get well together.

There are some older, comprehensive threads about the proper use of 100% pure acetone, with the series of dips and rinses in distilled water.

I know on red copper, acetone should definitely be avoided, but on an EF brown example, I could see where acetone may not do anything to the color and may work out just fine. I'd like to hear more about this though as I do not have any PERSONAL experience on the matter.

I just did a test on about 20 brown examples from the 20s and 30s, and I didnt see any color change. I did do a little MS70 on one of those test subjects and some attractive color showed through, not blue, like an Indian, but I wouldnt ever try that on an S VDB. I guess if I do get the guts to try it, Ill be more concerned about any cleaning marks. This coin should be in a holder at some point.

If a 1909 s VDB were mine, I'd send it to NCS for conservation and not take the chance of future BodyBagging it. jmo

    Acetone is fine.

This response makes no sense. YOU KNOW that on red copper it should be avoided but you have NO
    PERSONAL experience in this matter?

Is this a double negative response that says go ahead on copper, no matter?

Here is a beginning test that I am conducting. It's only been a bit over 3 months but you can clearly
see that the rinsed in acetone coin is not a deep and vibrant as the non rinsed example. Both were
from the same roll and appeared identical in color when I started. Both are being stored in my desk
drawer, side by side. Now a next April we may or may not see further changes. Both were immersed
in 100% pure acetone for 30 seconds and then air dried with no other rinses or dips or such.

I also though acetone and copper didn't mix well. I have heard something about pure olive oil. You may want to send it NCS for a fix.

Are you sure it is PVC? Acetone should do the trick and is harmless to BN copper, in my experience. I'd go with short dips followed by rinses in distilled water. Use clean acetone if more than one dip is needed.

Or maybe it's verdirgis. In which case I'd use VerdiCare. Supposedly the Sniffer barks at it, so a final acetone rinse might be a good idea.

    Let me clarify:

On red copper, I've ruined some as in I've done acetone on red copper cents and oops. On brown copper, I've not had the experience to pass along any information relating to what it may or may not do to the color of a brown copper cent. On a 2012 cent, it is not copper, it is zinc and acetone will ruin the zinc. Same goes for steel cents. Hope this clarifies what I was trying to get across.

I would stongly urge you to send it to NCS, no matter what you read here it only takes one time to ruin a nice coin.

I was told that 100% pure xylene I'd the best for use on red copper but I have never tried it.
