I can't be the only one doing this....(PSA Registry related)

In the past few weeks, I have purchased some random PSA cards and put them in the registry. With a few of the players I'm seeing that I have a decent percentage towards completing that set. Now I find myself looking specifically to complete each of those registries.

How do you remain rational in deciding how much to spend in relation to SMR, VCP, or recent ended auctions? I'm finding myself willing to justify spending a few dollars more than I normally would.

And being that I am working on a few "Basic Topps Sets" I now have to decide which one to focus on. Then I have to decide on what is more important, completion of all and upgrade later on or focus on quality now? I've been leading towards the focus on quality now and building each set slower. I figure there isn't a rush on this project.

Wouldn't it be awesome if these were the worst problems we had? (I know I'm not the only one here who thinks like this).
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

If you think that's bad, try completing registry sets that don't actually exist. I'm working on Autographed sets that don't really exist on the registry except in the Unsigned section - but I can't compete with the high grade collectors because most signed cards aren't in PSA 9 shape.

Good question, I am at #2 in the Harmon Killebrew Master Set and am far behind the #1 guy.

I seldom, if ever upgrade unless I can go up a full grade, a half grade doesn't do much. If I can go up several grades, (recently went from a 5 to an 8 on a Milk Duds box) I am willing to overspend.

Unfortunately, the items I have in lower grades are the "oddball" items and the bidding can get ridiculous. A few months ago a 1964 Bazooka Stamp full panel PSA 8 with Killebrew went for over $600.00! I did not win it, and still don't have one for my set.

    Have fun collecting!

I too have started my own registry set. I think I'l call it the HOF Combo Card Set. I have picked Topps cards, mostly 1958-1969, depicting multi player photos. I don't have all of them included, just the ones with really super stars. These are not league leaders, world series, or rookie cards, rather actual photos of 2-4 players in a pose. As of now I have 13 cards, mostly grading in the 5-7 grade. I am focusing more on real good centering and clean fronts with no designators. I will post a new thread when I recieve my display. My favorite year for the nicest combo cards is 1968, with Bird Belters(both Robinsons), Managers Dream (Oliva, Cardenas, Clemente), and Super Stars (Mays, Killebrew, Mantle). I think this set has some validity as I see more and more people collect the super stars and semi/regional stars of a set and forget about the commons. Some cards, such as the 64 set look ok in a PSA 5 or 6, but other years like 63 require a PSA 6 or 7. I have not paid more than $75 a card and am patient to get a nice card. I don't know for sure, but I suppose there are approx 10-12 more cards I am going to include.
So with that said, can we make suggestions to PSA for additional registries?
    CURRENT PROJECTS IN WORK:
To be honest, no direction, but...

There are a lot of people, I am not one of them, that feel this is the number one reason that PSA cards go so much higher in price than the other grading companies. I think it contributes, but not the number reason.

As far as some of your questions, I have found that I would rather collect at a pretty high grade rather than low grade & have to go back to upgrade. One of the reasons is that I am not happy with my resales of lower graded cards. They are just not in as much of a demand resulting in possible low prices.

I would like to say to John that I think that's an absolute great idea collecting the multiple player cards. There are so many great ones to list, but being a Dodger fan, I love the following:
1957 Dodgers Sluggers, 1958 Boss & Power, 1959 Hitter's Foes, 1960 Dodgers Backstops, 1961 Dodger Southpaws, Brother Battery, 1963 Dodgers Big Three, & I know it's a leader card, but still one of my favorites, 1965 Topps 64 ERA Leraders w/ Koufax & Drysdale.

For me I might spend a little bit more for a card if it's the last I need for the set. I did overbid for a 1968 PSA 8 Jose Cardenal which wasn't very well centered. I'd normally pass on the card but I really wanted to finish off the '68 set and there hadn't been many of that card up for sale in recent months. I don't overspend or go crazy upgrading trying to move up the registry. My goal stays at trying to build PSA 8 or better sets. I've finished off '68, '69 and '71 in PSA 8 or better, so 1970 is becoming my focus now. I won't settle for buying in PSA 7s or lower to fill in gaps. If I get one through a sub, I'll add it to my set until I can upgrade it but I won't actively purchase them.
  • I feel I should collect the cards I enjoy. If they fit in with the registry thing, great. If they don't, who cares.
I never buy a card just because I need it for the registry. I only buy a card if I enjoy it..
