Which should I purchase....

collectors, I need your help.
I'm contemplating a small purchase, either a 1983 Topps rack pack box OR a 1985 Topps rack pack box.
I would keep any star packs intact and bust open the others and start to put together a set for me and my son (family project)
My son is too young to know the players in either year but I want to know your opinion.....Kirby Puckett and Roger Clemens vs Ryne Sandberg, Tony Gwynn, and Wade Boggs?

I'd go with a more modern set with players he can still watch on ESPN.

Always buying Bobby Cox inserts. PM me.
  • The thing is he is more into the players that I remember and talk about when I tell him about growing up. I honestly don't watch or follow many of the new players and he is just into the teams not players.

I would do the 83 rack box. You have Gwynn, Boggs and Sandberg rookies (all HOF'ers). Plus Ripken 2nd year.

  • I agree with Cincy. 1983 being a little older than 1985 your son may find that pretty cool as he gets older and I don't think the steroid issue was as suspect back then as with some of the players who rookied in the 1985 set such as Clemens and McGwire. Your son might appreciate that as well when he gets old enough to know the difference. And honestly, I think the 1983 cards look better anyway!

That is a really tough choice for me but I think I would end up going for 1985 since this is just for fun. You get the guys already mentioned plus players like Mattingly, Gooden, Strawbery, Clemens, Davis, Puckett, Berra, etc.
  • I would go with the 83 set as well. It is the best design and nicest looking set of all the 80's Topps Sets.

Puckett and Clemens both have had their reputations dragged through the mud, hurting their card values.

I would go with the '85, at least two of the three have no problems..............so far.

For me personally, I live in Minnesota and don't hold Puckett's troubles against him. He was a great player and leader. Everyone seems to be down on Clemens as well, but he has been found not guilty in the courts.

By the way, Clemens was originally drafted by the Twins out of H.S. but didn't sign. Twins might have won a couple of more W.S. with Roger in their rotation!

  • 3 clean players vs 3 dirty players...hmm

If money isnt a factor - I would go with 83.

Getting one of those key rookies from 83 on top could also bring in more value in the future and demand than one of the 3 rookies from 85. Mcgwire on top alone sells between the 30-40 range. Its cool to have because that card peaked at $250 in its prime but Im sure the seller on eBay has probably ran sacked through that box. I only trust bbce at this point.

I havent checked what the 83 guys bring in but Im sure its a better investment either way.

I'd go with 83. I remember sorting this set at the kitchen table back in high school.

    Thanks,

My choice would be 85. Aside from the Clemens, Puckett and McGwire rookies...it would be neat to pull the Eric Davis and Hershiser rookies too. The 85 Mattingly has always been one of my favorite modern issues.

The answer, of course, is both.
