Just curious why BGS or BCCG? I have a GAI graded example and Im pretty sure that Steve Taft, the expert on these cards, was a part of their grading team. Same for SCD (sports card digest) grading. I have a few BGS graded star cards and I think SCD and GAI's grades are more accurate. BGS will also kill you on the centering.

    Oops, Sports Collector's Digest (SCD).

SCD was tougher on centering than even BGS. You can do well with their crossovers. Taft did authenticate for both SCD and GAI, I believe.

Good luck with your pursuit of a Jordan XRC, there are some on ebay, but of course, most are BIN's.

Good points. I did not know the history behind the SCD & GAI slabbed cards. Did not know that Steve Taft authenticated for them.

In that case, I would also be open to an SCD or GAI version.

I have completed all the star sets from 1983-1986 and it was a blast putting them together. I read where Taft, whom I consider the expert on these cards, said that if you found a centered #101 Jordan it was a fake. Makes you wonder about the BGS 9's you see with 9 or higher centering.

He said the same thing about the Olajuwon rookie.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Pretty happy that I found my Jordan. Great subs of all 9's OB except centering. I can easily live with the 7.5 on centering for this issue. I might resub to BGS to see if I can get an overall bump to 8.5. I know they don't simply average the 4 sub grades but still the average is 8.75 so I think it deserves the full 1 point upgrade from the lowest sub.

Great looking card. That would be the best 8 you can find. BGS will only give a half-grade over the centering or corners. So, if your card gets a 7.5 for centering the highest possible grade it could get would be 8.0 regardless of the other grades, same is if your card got a 7.5 for centering.

Beautiful card! And it is true about the centering of this card. It pains me to think how I kept waiting to find that perfectly centered one before dumping my hard earned money into it...
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

Fantastic card. The jordan is the last HOF rookie that I need from the Star sets. Congrats on the pick up
Scans of most of my Misc rookies can be found <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.collectors.com/m...y&keyword1=Non%20major">here
  • Congrats. Great MJ Star and at a reasonable price too. If ever you are going to drop big bucks on a card with a 7.5 centering grade this is the one. I have it with 8.5 centering and there is barely a difference. Every one I have ever seen in a BGS slab is OC. I think they grade this card on a curve!

Good info to know. I was not sure how the full vs 1/2 grade over lowest subs worked. Thx.

I have come to accept that I can't have the centering I like on this card! I hope you picked one up before the recent uptick!

Thanks. I am trying to figure out which other Star rookies I want to collect.

Thanks. If you have time, please post your 8.5 centering. I wonder if on a good day this could get an 8 for the centering and try and get the overall 8.5 grade. Since almost all the originals are poorly centered and the reprints are centered, I finally broke my min grade 9 on modern for this. I figured the other subs of at least 9 made up for it image

Which is a better investment long term(10+ years) the Star or the Fleer?

Crap shot right now. If PSA were to start grading the Star cards that would be the high flyer. Right now with only BGS slabbing the Star card, most people focus on the Fleer.

1986 Fleer PSA 8's are selling for about $700 to $900

1984 Star BGS 8's are selling for about $1,800 to $2,100

So I think the premium in the Star cards are factored in but which grows (or maintains) value for the long term will largely depend on what PSA does. If PSA starts grading them again I expect the Star cards to explode. If not I think they will move about the same.

Thanks hookem, I started another thread about the two.

My mistake above. I have corrected my post as BGS 8's are selling for $1,800-$2,100.

There is currently one PSA 8 on ebay with an asking price of $3,189 PSA 8 Jordan on eBay
