1704 Blenheim Commem

Considered by most scholars to be the turning point of the War of the Spanish Succession, The Battle of Blenheim was fought on August 13 1704. Louis XIV and the Elector of Bavaria were attempting to take Austria out of the war so that Louis' grandson could have the Spanish throne. Marshall Tallard, leading the French contingent, was taken prisoner and rather than being ransomed back to the French he was taken to England. The French sufffered approximately 30,000 casualties including killed, wounded and taken prisoner. This massive loss of men allowed the Grand Alliance to take Landau, Trier and Trarbach on the Moselle before the campaigning season of 1704 ended. The Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy were the leaders of the Grand Alliance forces. Interestingly Prince Eugene had actually grown up in the court of Louis XIV but Louis rejected him for military command, this led to his move to Austria to take up with the Emperor Leopold I.
