Possible Ebay Buyer issue.... Advice needed

I just received a message on a large poster I sold on Ebay. The buyer has received the item and is saying that "he isn't sure if he wants the poster now as there is a rather large crease near the bottom that wasn't described in the description". Now, I have responded indicating that there was no crease before it was shipped and it was shipped flat to him...I've asked if there was any damage to the packaging. Also, the pics are still on Ebay showing there are no creases in the poster. So, my question would be, what are the odds that he could get his money back from Ebay/Paypal? I purchased insurance through the Post Office when it was shipped, but if there is no damage to the packaging itself, could he still get his money back? I indicated in the listing that no returns or exchanges were accepted on the item. It seems if the buyer is setting it up to do a dispute by telling me it wasn't as described in the listing. Any advice or opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Tim

    USPS insurance = seller insurance.

You might want to get your insurance claim papers ready, because Ebay/Paypal will probably find in his favor.

^^ This...also inform the buyer that you will gladly refund his money as soon as he fills out the needed USPS insurance forms.

Tell him you need these forms becuase the USPS does not look kindly at postal insurance fraud.

I guess I would just like to see where the "alleged" crease is at on this poster. And I guess, will the PO even pay if the box shows no damage??? This seems like it might end up sucking. I hate people and should learn to live with wolves.

How much was the sale for? Is it really enough that it's worth making an issue of? Just asking. I have no clue and each of us is different.

Well, the final sale price was $396.98 so it's lil bit of change. My biggest concern is that it was consigned to me to sell.

Basically, the buyer will get his money back in all likelihood but will have to return the poster to you. If it went for more than market value, he might have creased
it on purpose to facilitate the return. Otherwise, he may be telling the truth as the USPS is often anything but gentle with packages. Selling on ebay is a real risk
these days and your consignor should be made aware of that. He might be fishing for a partial refund, too. If you offer him $30 back or something like that, it
might be worth avoiding the hassle.

Ouch, best of luck with that.

If I was the consignor, I wouldn't be too happy about it getting damaged "on your watch". Hope the insurance works out.

Grote...I get the idea from the message that he might be trying to get some money back. This is a limited ed poster Jeter signed poster...only 40 of them and I believe that I know where the other 39 are at so I don't think there is a market set on it. BB, it was consigned by the brother of a female friend of mine...they were thrilled with all the stuff that sold and made out very well. All of the items were handled with extreme care while in my possession and well packaged for delivery. Unless there is some damage to the box it was shipped in, there shouldn't be any type of crease. Might try to work something out if he is fishing for a refund.

simply have him mail the poster back to you (return postage is on him) & subsequently refund him the money. If there is no damage, sell it again...If there is damage, file a claim........

He absolutely will get his money back from eBay/PayPal no matter what. Don't worry about all of the stuff that's been said about it.

If item comes back with a crease, submit your insurance papers and you should be OK.

I just had to send back a $90.00 item that was creased. Scans looked perfect. When I got the item (packaging looked fine) I was comparing it to the item in my set it was going to replace, it looked MUCH better! Then as I turned it under the light I saw a rather long "wrinkle" on the surface of the item (Exhibit card). Wrinkle did not show through on the reverse.

Stuff happens, not always a conspiracy.

  • USPS is going to want to see all the packaging and will basically tell you they don't cover improperly packaged items. Basically, if it was able to get damaged in the packaging, they will not cover it.

Have him send the poster back to you in the original packaging. If he sends it back and the packaging is damaged, file a pic of the packaging with the insurance claim...if it isnt damaged....DAMAGE IT
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

Not sure recommending postal fraud is advisable in these circumstances.

Well, he said there was nothing at all wrong with the packaging, so it wouldn't have been able to get creased in shipping. It is a very heavy stock, so I don't know how it would have occured without the packaging being damaged. I have asked him for a pic of the crease about 3 hours ago but have yet to receive a pic or a response. Guess we'll see what happens.

This could be a can of worms for sure. First, my concern is that Ebay issues the refund before he returns the item or worse case he doesn't return the item at all----does this ever happen? Second, you most likely will need the damaged packaging. The post office can be a stickler on big ticket items and proper packaging. I once purchased a 54 Ted Williams PSA 7 for $700. The seller sent it insured for $700, in a small padded envelope, not even a box. So of course some numnutz at the PO ran the package through the first class letter sorting machine and it got crushed. The seller sent me the claim form and I actually filed it to collect the $700. A gamble yes, but I wanted to control the situation. Plus my postmaster is an absolute gem and I knew she would go to bat for me. She actually told claims that the packaging was good enough and the PO screwed up by sorting it through the first class sorter. This is a pet peeve of hers as I've had 6 cards damaged over the years like this. Anyway, after some shenanigans by claims, they did send me a check for $700.

So after quick responses earlier, I have not received a response or the requested pic. Not saying he is scamming, but I would think he would want to send a pic....least I would after spending $400. Still waiting.....

Tim, I didn't realize how fluent you are in ebayese! I think your translation deserves an A+.

No, the guy said he was sending it back if his friend doesn't take it. He obviously doesn't want it because of the damage and before he sends it back he's going to see if he can dump it to a friend for what he paid for it. This saves him money by not having to return it and it saves your butt because you will not win an insurance claim without his full cooperation.

And yet still no response or pic from him. How long do you wait for something like this? Hmmmmmmmmmmm

  • ive lost a lot of money with posters mostly due to idiots just wanting to upgrade the ones they have,, i very faintly signed the back of each one in pencil so if i get one back i'll know its my original i sent, or their junk,, cant fight the return policy you can only block them for the future,, j

I hear ya on that one. Thing is, this is a limited edition numbered 1 of 40 and I think I know where the other 39 of them are at, so I think it is just a case of buyers remorse. Funny thing was, I had offers during the auction for more than what it ended at but I don't like to end auctions early.

So opinions on how long I should wait for this person to either send a pic or decide that he wants/doesn't want this item? Haven't heard from him in 2 days.

I wouldn't bother contacting him. Let him follow up if he is going to. You might never hear from him again.
