Not positive, but that doesn't appear to be standard issue military apparel, LOL..

Nice collection of packs! I don't collect hockey but the graphics are great!

There was an amazing find of hockey packs a few years ago from Mastro (now Legendary Auctions).

Things you just don't see everyday, like 65/66 packs and 61/62. There was also a video, I think on youtube, of someone opening a 54/55 pack. Pretty rare stuff.

The thread title and images changed, so some of the responses may appear a little off subject. image

Actually most of the responses still make sense to me.

Best of luck with your collecting goal. Unopened pack collectors are growing, but still rare around here.

I wonder how many unopened unopened image 50s/60s packs are still out there. I've learned a lot of the GAI packs won't cross to PSA and that most of the raw have been opened.

Great run of packs. Even though I am not a hockey collector, I really like your hockey packs.

For several years, GAI was the only option to grade packs and many of those graded packs are perfectly fine as I have opened well over 100 of them with very few issues. I also bought quite a few from Steve, both wax and cello, which are also perfectly fine. When buying unopened packs, you just have to do your homework, know who you're buying from and what to look for.

Luckily I have you and a couple others I can rely on to be my "eyes" in the States. Regretfully, every GAI pack I've liked so far I've been told to steer clear or purchasing. I've saved a lot of money courtesy of this forum!

you have to consider the source of a lot of the advice to steer clear. As Tim said, there are a lot of GAI graded packs that are perfectly fine- it was only a few years ago that Steve Harts entire site was nothing but GAI graded packs.
But Ryan Rutter got in there (GAI) and graded a lot of arts and crafts projects and it was downhill from there. That doesn't mean there weren't good packs graded during and after his time (there were) and they probably were some bad packs that got thru prior- no one is perfect, and no service is flawless. GAI has certainly deserved a lot of skepticism, but to say all packs or even a majority in those holders are bad is simply not true.

Stick to some simple rules and you should be in safe waters:

    1. Learn about what you're buying. Look at seals, folds, etc and know what is possible and what isn't. At least for the time being you can search over a decade of Mastro/Legendary auctions, as well as REA's. While I wouldn't buy from Mark Murphy his book is worth the $5 or whatever he's charging for it.
    2. Be reasonable in your expectations and don't let greed get in the way. If a deal is too good to be true it probably is. You're simply not going to find a '52 pack for $2k.
    3. Provenance. Know who you are buying from. A solid source is certainly worth a bit of a premium- how many cheap deals does it take to overcome getting burned on an expensive pack that was no good?
    4. Don't stop looking once you see the holder. Authentication is an opinion- bear it in mind, but look at the item and form your own opinion. In most cases if you walk away from a deal another will come along.
    5. Talk to people. Learn whatever they will share. Steve Hart has always been happy to chat when he's not slammed, Tim (Grote), Don (Summer), Duncan (packcollector I think), Ken Meyer and others have always been happy to share their knowledge. In Ken Meyers case, ecstatic to do so- he'll even show you his time machine.
    6. Jump on finds when you can. '54 Topps Canadian packs, '64 Standup penny packs, both finds temporarily dropped the price of those issues and were a great time to jump on something that had cost a whole lot more previously. Plus the provenance on both were solid. There will be more finds, keep an ear to the ground.
    7. Christmas rack packs are bogus. So are grocery cellos.
    8. Enjoy what you collect. Don't be so obsessed with grades or what you paid for something that it prevents you from enjoying it.

PS '56 and '58 nickel will break the bank if you can even find them

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's
