Yeah one person who maybe has an axe to grind. There are way more people on here who I trust when it comes to unopened product, and if they say Steve is the real deal he is. My dealings with him have been nothing but A+ If you are going to be a sh*t stirrer then man up and come out from behind your alt!
I'm not the officianato that others are here when it comes to unopened wax.
I will only state my personal wax opening experiences over the years (not including the ones I did as a kid).
1. Bought a few 1973 o-pee-chee baseball wax boxes from a dealer I know in Canada. They yielded pack fresh beauties. This info was found out through these boards.
2. Bought a few packs of 1975 Topps minis from 70'scollector here on this forum. The cards were amazing.
3. Bought a 1972 o-pee-chee baseball wax box from BBCE years ago. Many of the cards were gum ruined. Didn't yield anything at all. I was involved with one BBCE rip here on the boards. After the rip, I decided never to do it again.
So I'm sure I'm in the minority when it comes to BBCE, but the best rips I've had are with other guys who have great reputations here on this board, while my BBCE experiences have not been that great. However, my purchases are not a good enough sample size to gather any valueable information from them.
Well, I'm pretty sure that untrustworthy sellers don't put cellos with Montana RC and Ripken RC on top into generic boxes when selling them..

A-Hole: "Hey Steve, give me a 75% discount, or I'll write something nasty about you on Yelp. BBCE: "No." A-Hole: "Thanks. Just wrote a "review" about your company. LOLOLOLOLOL!!"
If you purchase unopened material and you don't receive a rookie or star card, it doesn't mean the packs were opened and resealed; it simply means you didn't receive a rookie or star card.
This forum has it's fair share of instigators. It's too bad. I suspect there'd be a lot more members if it weren't for all the malcontents.
I have have purchased many, many different years/packs from BBCE over the years.... everything was legit, I pulled great cards, and they always respond quickly and politely to my phone calls and e-mails. Once, when I was outbid on a lot of unopened boxes on e-bay, I e-mailed them to see if they had anymore available. They responded right away and offered them to me at a price even lower than my max bid from e-bay. What more could you ask for?
<< <i>If the OP is really disgusted with BBCE, then just buy from Larry Fritsch. I've bought from Fritsch and was amazed at what I got. >>

It was one review. One person's opinion. You read a review from someone you don't know and now believe it over the 100s of reviews you've read here? If I relied on one person's information in my field; I'd be dead.
Did you watch the video of the 1954 Topps Hockey wax pack opened in Toronto? A $5K pack that yielded maybe $3.5K in cards... should we author a bad review on Yelp about Topps employees from 1954?
Bottom line is anyone who knows anything about unopened product knows that Steve is as reputable and trustworthy as they come.
What's amusing is how people who don't know anything about the unopened hobby claim a pack is resealed because they didn't pull a HOFer or key RC.
Topps did not produce these packs to yield PSA 10s...these were trading cards to flip among friends.
I have been collecting unopened for over 20 years now, and can say without question that Steve is as legit as they come.
In fact, I just ordered a few OPC packs along with my cello boxes, and 1 of the 2 77 OPCs had Fisk on back and 1 of the 78s had Ryan on back.
People here are opening 82 Topps cello boxes that were sold as regular cello boxes and pulling packs with Ripken RC on top. Another guy pulled an 81 cello with Montana on top. When we had the 76 cello rip, one back had Brett on back and another had Yount on back. What more do you need?

"Yelp extortion" is pretty common these days. There's a local restaurant that got some press because of it. Some dude threatened the restaurant with a bad review if they didn't give him free food. They didn't comply, and couple of bad reviews showed up.
Yeah & the last 75 mini rip had tons of o/c crap.....& don't count the 80's stuff, a lot of that is gonna be good because there is so much of it. You could use it as toilet paper

I rarely post on the boards, but I did notice this thread and wanted to respond. My experiences with Steve Hart and the Baseball Card Exchange have been excellent. Steve, in my opinion, has always been great for me to deal with. I've bought several things and it really seems like he appreciates my business. I followed up the YELP review with one of my own.
[echo] i get a kick out of the perception that unopened product is supposed to be the gateway to riches, when the majority of what's inside is destined for darkness.
there's a reason kids bike-spoked and flipped cards.....a lot of what was bought in toy stores and five-and-dimes was basically crap.
because Topps' quality control sucked. plain and simple.
it's what caused some of us to turn to stickers and other dumb stuff, because you could have the same gum along with something else useful instead of a miscut picture of Manny Sanguillen.
there must be incredible pressure on Steve to not only locate the product, but then go pins-and-needles waiting for the next a-hole to go ballistic because they got something that was crap ever since production.
why is he responsible for that? in fact, why should he even compensate anyone for poor judgement and a lack of knowledge?
and yet, he does. enjoy the reward people. there won't be another guy for you like Steve Hart. you'd better hope he lives a to be a world record age and still wants to put up with this nonsense. [/echo]

By your statement on '75 Topps rip you obviously haven't opened very much.
And some people would complain after spending a night with (insert the hot female of your choice) or not winning Lotto. You will NEVER satisfy everyone all of the time.
Personally, I would feel more comfortable buying unopened product from BBCE than from most other outlets, but in the same respect, on a sizable purchase, I still want the opportunity to view such items in person before laying down significant funds.
I've personally had only positive experiences with Steve and BBCE. Do they make mistakes, sure. So does everyone, but I like my odds a lot better than going through the minefield on eBay. Even well intentioned eBay sellers unknowingly sell bad product. It has taken me a long time to feel confident spotting unopened and the key is to educate yourself. Don't throw stones as they will always end up coming right back at you tenfold.

I also wrote a review on this one. Wasn't familiar with Yelp, but that one review was ridiculous. I suggest if you disagree with it flag it for being defamatory and misleading. Yelp can remove absolutely untrue reviews.

And when BBCE does make a mistake, they take care of it immediatly with no questions asked. Even more of a reason why they are the #1 un-opened dealer.
BBCE is tops in my book. I'm relatively new to the unopened market. But I've dealt a few times with Steve and Reed on phone. Always courteous and helpful. Steve is always happy to talk through his current offering. I called once and spoke to Reed for 40 minutes about collecting, probably One of the best chats I've had with someone on collecting. Shipping always fast to NY.
I purchased 5 boxes of 87 OPC last year on black friday. Got 10% off and free shipping. The boxes were only 9.00 or 8.10 with discount. 3 of the 5 boxes were resealed. It was very easy to tell due to the fact that when opening the packs from those 3 boxes, large wax flakes would fall out. Those three boxes yielded no major cards, but had some really well centered commons.
The other two boxes were clearly legit. No Bonds in any of the 5 boxes.
Never contacted Steve.
Still not upset. Made a full set minus Clemens and Bonds, plus two full Braves team set.
I had a blast opening them and it only cost me a little change over forty bucks.
My belief: Steve is as honest as they come, he however is not perfect. There will be some resealed product get past him.
I would purchase from him at anytime. I would not think twice about it and look forward to some junk wax purchases in the future.
Honestly, there is way too much feedback available on the net these days. What happened to legit word of mouth?
If you have to go to a website like "Yelp" to determine your best course of action, you are lost to begin with and nothing found anywhere will help you
There's actually 5 reviews.. but they have some filter which is filtering out three of them. I am trying to see if I can revise mine so that the filter doesn't keep moving it to not counting towards the score.
I have been part of several group rips, and made several orders from the BBCE site, after 35 years of collecting including owning my own retail store, Steve and BBCE are still the best. It amazes me that these threads keep popping up. Get a life. If you do not like the company do not buy from them. There are other choices. Steve's reputation speaks for itself. Just my 2 cents. Mark

Mentioning the 75 mini group rip as evidence was the most naive post I have seen in this whole thread. The results sucked, but were as legitimate a it gets. Minis centered differently are the exception, not the rule.
Honest people get taken by dishonest every day, I am sure Steve is no exception, but having opened many packs, boxes and cases from BBCE, I have zero concern about their integrity.

These were the packs that BBCE offered in-store credit to those who wanted refunds for their packs... or did you conveniently forget that part. I was one of the first ones to open my packs and discovered the stains, and that's when he offered the refunds (which I didn't take).
I bought a couple of '75 mini cellos last year. Both of them had commons on the front but one had Brooks Robinson on the back. Wasnt charged any extra for a star showing.
I thought I'd give BBCE a "try" after reading Simmons article on ESPN.com about them. Small order of about $100.00. The very first pack I opened was an 80 Topps with a Henderson rookie in it. I've never looked back. I only buy from BBCE. I trust them, and that's everything.
Bringing someone's reputation into question without real evidence is usually not a very good idea. But when the someone in question is Steve Hart, it's absolutely laughable to put any credence in it.
Steve is, without a doubt, as honest as they come. He may not be perfect (few people are), but I am confident that he has NEVER tried to pass off something as legitimate when he had even the slightest inkling that it was either was no good or questionable.
As a businessman, Steve has always been first-class. His customer service is top notch. He's reachable. he takes the time to work with and get to know his customers.
The fact that someone doesn't pull perfectly centered, star rookie cards from vinatge unopened packs is not so surprising. It's not as if Topps and other companies had huge quality assurance processes back in the days when most of us were putting the cards in our bike spokes or flipping them against walls. There was more QA happening for the GUM than for the cards.
With regard to the recent 75 mini rip, the serial number on the side of that case was KNOWN to be one that has yielded a lot of duds. It's unfortunate that he clearly had to pay "up" (relative to his usual buy prices) in order to get that case. It's also unfortunate that we've been going through a vintage 70s "slowdown" over the past 6 months so people were itching to get in on a break at prices that were significantly higher than in the recent past.
There are a lot of shenanigans going on out there (card cutters, resealers, people putting together bogus packs, etc.), but I have absolute confidence in Steve Hart/BBCE as someone who is both:
a) NOT involved in any way with that kind of activity and b) One of the people who is ACTIVELY working to expose such fraudsters, including working with local, state and even FEDERAL authorities when he becomes aware of such situations
Steve has my full confidence, support and business!
