"1979- BB, FB, Hockey (Note: there is considerable debate, based on the pricing circle and codes on the back of the trays and cello wrap, as to whether 1979 Hockey trays were produced by Topps or by a resealer)"
So they're saying the little white circle with the "cent" sign is the tell for these trays?

I personally only collect unopened baseball, but I would be interested in studying the codes on the back of the trays. I'm guessing it would be similiar to the codes on the back of the regular cello packs. Codes ending in "8" are wrappers for 1978 and 1979, etc., etc.

Stay away. There is some debate as to whether Topps ever issued them, but regardless most of the ones you see up for sale are counterfeit.
Collecting 1970s Topps baseball wax, rack and cello packs, as well as PCGS graded Half Cents, Large Cents, Two Cent pieces and Three Cent Silver pieces.

It wouldn't have anything to do with Gretzky would it??? >>
I always thought it was Gordie's last card, LOL..

I collected several of the wax trays over the years before I heard of all the negative possibilities. I ripped all but one of my trays after so many questioned their validity. I am not convinced of anything because I did pull a Gretzky from a tray pack, however I will say that the quality of all cards that I have ripped from tray packs are usually 6 or 7 gradeable at best.
We've had discussions on this topic in the past and it's probably safe to say that '79 hockey trays (as well as '80-81 basketball trays) are fakes. I believe Steve Hart has confirmed it too.
Look at it this way-- I bought my '79 tray 6 or 7 years ago and before that I had never seen one before. If '79 trays were legit they would have been a hot item at least dating back to the late '80s when hockey cards got hot (though considering the Gretzky rookie, I imagine they'd have been a desirable item for most of the '80s). Ditto for the '80 basketball trays that still occasionally show up.

<< <i>I've been told by many people that Topps never produced Hockey Racks in 1979.

Actually, it was the first year cards for the old WHA teams. Plus, Bobby Hull was the man.
