How can this even be possible?

So I was randomly looking up prices on VCP and saw a 1951 Bowman Mantle PSA 2 PSA 2. This is over 2.5x the average price for the past couple of years. Then I saw it was Probstein's auction.

My question is, is he really this good? Is this a pristine example of the card that should've gotten a much higher grade? Something just seems off.

I understand paying a slight premium for a high dollar card from a trusted seller, but almost $2K more? If this is the case, then why would anyone try to sell their cards on their own when he can achieve prices that are this far off the market?

Disclaimer: I have never used Probstein's services in the past. I have heard ONLY positive things about all aspects of his business. And if I see this trend continue, he will get 100% of my card selling business.
I'm building a 1968 and a 1970 Topps set. I have lots of 1970s and 1960s to offer in trade.

it is a crease free version and nicely centered. with tape residue being the major flaw but not so bad. imo
actually looks like a psa 5+ to me

I agree. This card is an AMAZING example of a PSA 2. Tape residue knocked the hell out of the grade. That being said, Rick is a great seller and I do think he will get a premium for you more times than not.

A card doctor will crack that out and make it a 5, possibly by just removing the tape residue.

When it comes to Probstein123 or PWCC I said "uncle" a long time ago trying to get there auction prices. Will probably scrap my own account and go with one of them in the near future.

What kind of commissions does Probstein charge?

I don't see a problem with that. If someone has the skill to remove tape residue that wasn't there when the card was produced and can turn a profit then great. Who is that guy that specializes in removing stains?

I think this just goes to show that Mantle stuff is still in high demand., He is the man when it comes to baseball. I have quite a few raw Mantles, mid to late 60's. I supposse at some point I will grade 'em, although none will grade above a 6-7, most will be lower than that. I think the hobby is in pretty good shape, despite the crappy economy. This guy diffently bought the card and not the grade-good move.
