Decent Pawn Store find this morning....Morgans on the cheap. PICS ADDED 1st thread. Fire away.

The local pawn store had a wooden display case with 5 Morgans priced at $119.00
They looked like unmessed with coins from a distance, so asked if I could take a closer look. I was hoping it was one of those sets with with P D S O CC coins.
But, they were ALL Carson City mint marked.
1878 CC XF
1891 CC VG
1891 CC F
1891 CC VF
1891 CC VF
also picked up a Keller 2oz bar for $59.
Very happy day
Edited to say....: I took a few pics. Upon closer inspection, not all completely problem free, but hey.

I'd head back to that shop periodically. It seems that they don't realize mintmarks are something important.
<< <i>That is more of a "monster rip" than a "decent find." Good job.

I check them all the time. A few months ago they had the 1998 Kennedy set for something like 49.00
I have some mixed feelings about it but they're the ones putting the asking price on it. I aslo hate to think what they're paying people for the coins. I wouldn't hesitate to pay folks WAY more directly, but it's tought to get the word out.
A seller can charge any price for their merchandise that they want to. Most of the time, pawn shops are charging too much for coins and basically trying to take money out of your pocket. In my view, that entitles you to take advantage of any cherrypicks that come along without a drop of remorse.
I'd say you done pretty good. Probably didn't even haggle with them did you?
My best find at a pawn shop was a set of old coins by denomination (Dollar, Silver Half, Silver Quarter, Silver Dime, etc). I flipped the Dollar over thinking it was a 78-S but it was a 78-CC in XF instead. I 'bout pooped my pants when he told they had to have $40 for the whole set. I said "well, I guess I'll take it for that."
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.

sweet score i'd say...bigtime congrats
probably decimal point error...
<< <i>Hope they are real >>
Just what I was thinking. For your sake I hope you got a great deal...but most pawn guys are savvy enough to do some research before selling...and there are a lot of Asian fake CC pieces floating around.

+1
Can you post a photo of them? Do you have an accurate way to get a weight?

They're real...based on 25 years of experience...but they weigh right too.
I'll have to get some pics but my camera is at work, so I'll post an update on Monday.
<< <i>Was that less than melt? Very nice deal. That must have made your day.
Mark >>
Melt is around 21
That was a rip of large proportion!
<< <i>YOU SUCK!
bob
I agree... YOU SUCK!
Congrats on your find!

I think I will start checking out pawnshops more.
Gives us hope and encouragement that there are still deals to be found.
It's gotten harder and harder with the internet and all the deal hunters punching bar codes and other info into their smart phones..
I used to love making the rounds through thrift stores looking for rare jazz records, musical instruments and electronics...
Pickins are much tougher now.
Congratulations and cheers to you my friend...
And a no guilt deal too given all the times the pawn ship has taken advantage of people in distress. ( unless they're a rare bright gem in that industry)..
