First time submitting coins...any advice?

Believe it or not, I've never submitted a coin in my years of coin collecting and haggling. The submission process seems slightly intimidating, and I may just start out by joining up at the cheapest membership level and sending just 1 or 2 coins to get my feet wet. So, do you have any suggestions or advice on avoiding any pitfalls? Maybe I'm making too big of a deal out of it, but I thought I'd ask.

Take some pics of the coins you want to submit and post them here for opinions. This may save you some money and heartache.

Don't be in a hurry to get your coins back unless you pay moon money for 24 hour submissions.

Remember, you're paying for their opinion. Sometimes it's not the same as yours.

Fear Not It is an easy process once you do it you'll be hooked. I know I reup my membership once a year and I always have done the 8 coin voucher and with the voucher you can send all your coins in under secure plus at no additional fee. You can do the same with the 4 coin voucher and that maybe your best bet unless you have 8 waiting to go in. And if any questions arise you can call pcgs and they will be more than willing to walk you thru the first submission. Good luck............Enjoy tom image

A few recommendations from my experience:

    1. Spreading out the submission costs over more coins saves money on the shipping and submission costs.
    2. Be honest with yourself and grade your coins before you send them in, perhaps even share with someone so you'll be accountable to be honest on what you really expected for a grade, rather than, "I was hoping for 64, but 63 is okay." When what you really thought is, "This is a lock 65!"
    3. Make notes on each coin for yourself so you can similarly evaluate and refine your eye. Note hairlines, possible cleaning/damage, etc.
    4. Recognize that the various submission tiers need to be on separate submission forms and you burn $24 minimum with each form, so try to group your submissions so you can get them on the smallest number of forms. Submitting more coins under a more expensive tier, could turn out to be cheaper than splitting into two submission forms.

Best advice is to follow the submission instructions, package your coins securely, adequately insure and be optimistic but patient. You're submitting coins for grading, not launching a vehicle into space so there is no need to overthink things.

Or find a good dealer like Wei image and get your feet wet by having them submit for you, the first time. See how that goes and then decide if you want to pay for subscription.

My advice is to be very cautious. It can be highly addictive. Try finding a a psychologist who specializes in numismatics.

Send in nice coins. That way, if they don't grade what you want, crack them out and
    you still have nice coins.

I'm not exactly up to date on the process myself. The last time I submitted coins to PCGS is when they had the old green holders, no joke!!! I think I need to get out more.image

Make sure you send 'em with fancy french chocolates and maybe a couple of weekend passes to The Bunny Ranch in Vegas.
