I'm sure it would have to do with the striking die being the reverse. THe anvil die, or obverse, is fixed and would retain die polishing longer. Just my guess to keep the thread at the top!

have one sided obverse DMPL's though I have a 64PL 80-S that has the deepest reverse of any coin I own.
78-S 82-S
Strike me as one sided reverse DMPL's.
Most other years seem pretty even. Any year can have the abnormally of a one sided here or there. When you get one side DMPL and the other side has no mirror it is likely they only changed one die. That seemed to happen with SF the most. Curious to hear the thoughts of others.

I have an 81-S that has a reverse that has 10" mirrors and barely PL on the obverse. PCGS MS63PL I have an 80-S that has 8" mirrors on the obverse and barely PL on the reverse. PCGS MS64PL

probably though it has to do with how fine the devices are compared obverse to reverse reverse has alot of really fine stuff going on...it's busy like a mine field obverse has a big hole on the front pretty much...like a big ol pothole you wish your ex falls in

When a die wore out / broke only it was replaced with a new die.
True double sided DMPLs started with a fresh SET of dies.
