A new way to lose PSA cards in the mail

Perhaps this is a first. I am gone for the weekend so I miss the mail on Saturday and Monday. Our neighborhood has a large metal group mailbox that has 16 units, each requiring a key to get into. Its nice because you can drive up to it and get your mail on the way home. So I get home late Monday night and go to get the mail but the group mailbox has disappeared. Only a cut off metal post is left. I know I have two cards in the mailbox from eBay because of delivery confirmation information. I find out that someone ran into it so the USPS hauled it away to be replaced some time in the near future. But you guessed it, when I go to the Post Office to get my mail from the now long-gone mailbox, both packages were smashed up. Neither was insured and $100 is lost. Ouch. My only saving grace was that I had a nice 1959 PSA 9 card coming that didn't make the Monday delivery, so it is safe and secure.

If you wanted to, even though it was not the seller's fault, you could probably still file an ebay claim that the package was damaged upon delivery. You'd probably have a decent chance of winning also since it is the seller's responsibility to ensure that the package is safely delivered and include insurance if the seller thinks it is worth it.

I'd at least make some phone calls to see if anything could be done. Afterall this is somewhat of an out of the ordinary situation.
Perhaps the Insurance co for the driver that hit the mailbox would pay your claim??

    +1

I would open a case and ask the seller if he insured the cards, if he did threw ebay shipping he should then file a claim and get refunded.

This. Get a copy of a police report detailing the incident and file a claim against the motorist's liability insurance for property damage. I hope you kept the damaged cards as evidence and that you can prove what they were worth prior to their destruction.

Was it a USPS owned box? Technically would it not still be in their possession? Not saying that they should replace it but they could easily lump it into their claim against the driver for the total damages. Especially since you have a detailed tracking log to show it was in there... and maybe a usps witness who you showed it was damaged.

I pay $52 a year to have an indoor post office box, precisely because I worry about our neighborhood outdoor box.

Thanks for your responses. The driver is unknown, apparently did the damage and left without anyone seeing it. So no luck with pursuing liability on the part of the driver. I will check back with the post office and with ebay. Don't know if there is a police report as a neighbor noticed it, called the post office who came and took it away and it was replaced today. As I said earlier, cards were not insured. However, as I look at the cards now, one of them may be able to be reslabbed as the case is cracked in several places but I can't see that the card is damaged. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions and I'll see what happens.
