SGC Announces New Half Grades in Its Grading Scale

Heading into the National Convention, SGC has announced on its message boards an important update to its grading system. Effective immediately, four new half grades will be available as part of the grading scale. The new grades are as follows:

SGC 35 â€“ 2.5 GOOD+
SGC 45 â€“ 3.5 VG+
SGC 55 â€“ 4.5 VG/EX+
SGC 82 â€“ 6.5 EX/NM+

PSA , i think needs to do this alot more on lower end cards, how can you go from PSA1(poor) to PSA2(good) and PSA 3(VG)?? first in poor and good, where is fair and fair to good? Also huge help if they used half grades more, for G-VG , The hardly ever use half grades and need to!!! How can a card only be poor psa1 or good psa2 and not have in between. There is a huge gap there that psa needs to fix, let me know what you think, SGC has got this right!!

PSA has half grades. What are you referring to? They have 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, etc. I'm confused.

PSA need to go with Quarter Grades.

I know they have them. but they are rarely seen to me at least on ebay. They need to use them more, mostly for lower grade, psa 5 and under. Most of the time i see them they are all pre 1948 cards. i Hardly ever see them on cards in late 50's and 1960's and early 1970's where they need to be used more. I have seen so many psa 1 poor, cards that are not poor. there is just to little room psa1 is poor and psa3 is vg, and you can see a huge difference. That is where they need to use the half grades alot more, b/c you have psa 7,8,9 that look the same and some psa 8's better than a psa 9?? All i am saying is how do you go from poor, psa 1 to a good, psa 2? In 1960's for example, i never see a psa 1.5 and rarely see psa 2.5 and 3.5 on big stars and rookies. i am just stating what i see and just asking if anyone thiks the half grades need to be used more???

Or they could just go with a 1,000 point scale (I'd say hundred but SGC has that one covered) with a grade for every number. 1=Total Crap, 2=Mostly Crap, 3=Some Crap, 4=Crap, 5=Almost Crap, etc.

You dont see low psa grades except for HIGH dollar cards.....SGC mostly grades prewar cards that are condition sensitive and have been subjected to wear for a longer period of time.

PSA uses the .5 system plenty for lower end cards. It's only had the .5 system for a couple of years so you're looking at a lot of the pre-.5 graded cards. There's not a huge price difference between most cards in the 1-2 range so I would imagine it wouldn't necessarily be worth spending the money for regrading to get a bump from 1-1.5.

had some point 5's on the low end recently, but i'm still trying to figure out exactly how they deduct as my understanding was the middle grade was directed at how well the card is centered.

doesn't always seem to be the case, however.

the addition of in-between grades will only cause a need for greater interpretation. it also makes subbing cards more challenging.

I THINK FOR THE REASONS I STATED THAT THEY NEED TO DO IT FOR THE CONDITION OOF THE CARD, YOU KNOW, SUCH AS CORNERS, CREASES, WRINKLES, ECT... I DONT KNOW, ARE THE HALF GRADES PSA GIVES JUST FOR CENTERING ISSUES AND NOT CONDITION OF THE CARD? TANKS FOR A REAL REPLY, UNLIKE THESE EXPERT FUNNY GUYS ON THIS THREAD, PEACE

It's not just for centering. The .5s are reserved for cards that aren't good enough to make it to the next full grade up but are better than lower grade. There is a lot of emphasis on centering but it's not the only criteria. I have seen some horridly centered .5s that had other redeaming qualities.

Half-Point Grades:
Cards that exhibit high-end qualities within each particular grade, between PSA Good 2 and PSA Mint 9, may achieve a half-point increase. While PSA graders will evaluate all of the attributes possessed by a card in order to determine if the card may be eligible, there will be a clear focus on centering.
