DMPL AU58 Morgans- Premium for this grade?

ManorcourtmanManorcourtman Posts: 8,195 ✭✭✭✭✭
For the Morgan guys a question. Would a DMPL AU58 PCGS or NGC carry a premium for this unusual grade? If so what would you guesstimate? I'm talking about a common date ie. 81-s or 80-s for example. Thanks in advance.

I would argue the premium would be very modest. Collectors who want DMPL Morgans are generally looking for ultra high-grade coins with great eye appeal. They are willing to pay up for deep mirrors. Collectors who buy AU58 coins are looking for all the details without the big price tag. I would think the AU58 collector would be more likely to buy an AU58 DMPL, so the premium over a non-DMPL example would be slight or modest. The exception might be a rare date like 1894 or 1901 that is seldom or "never" seen in DMPL, forcing DMPL collectors to take whatever is available. A similar example is impaired 19th century proofs. Is a PR45 really worth more than an XF45? There are few people who will pay extra for it, so these coins are hard to sell at a premium. Collectors of 19th century proofs collect proofs because they don't want worn coins.

he's right about that. there have been a few discussions recently about the realized values for 58 everyman coins in holders being so high, sometimes over 64 money!

Does PCGS now recognize PL-ness on AU coins?

If you took a 64 DMPL Morgan and rubbed the high spots without touching the fields, wouldn't it still be DMPL?

I never saw any of them listed when building my Everyman set but found most of the AU58's cost more than price guide if bought at open auction. Luckily I was able to get most of the commons in a private treaty deal.

Doing a check of the PCGS population report shows that there is only a single AU58DMPL in it so rarity will mean some premium for sure, if the coin has not been cracked and regraded.

  • Manorcourtman,

I am one of the Morgan Everyman collectors. PCGS has given 4 AU58PL & 1 DMPL.

Yes to the premium. But it might be as high as you think.

If you get PCGS to give it the AU-58PL or DMPL slab, your premium would be higher. Look at my registry set. If you get one let me know.

    Nick

Btw, to answer your question, If you do get a PCGS AU58 PL/DMPL you could get a price in the MS61-64 Price range. MS65 if you get a bidding war going. It only takes two people,to drive up the price.

The issue you would have is that PCGS is very picky about giving out the DMPL and PL on the AU58 coins. To date only 4 PL and 1 DMPL Morgans in AU58 have been graded that way by PCGS. (Also AU55 Morgan is also PL)

It is my understanding that PCGS will not give the PL or DMPL designation to AU coins. The ones that are listed in the population reports must be mistakes or were put in before this policy was in effect.

I have cracked out NGC and Anac AU PL's so I could put them in PCGS holders thus being able to add them into my registry set.
