BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A Sullivan County grand jury has indicted a man in the theft of nearly $730,000 in gold bars, coins and a gun from his employer.
The Kingsport Times-News (http://bit.ly/M8Sbjc ) reported the charges were handed up Tuesday against 55-year-old Michael Ray McLeod. The indictment charged McLeod with selling what were described as "kilo-size gold bars" that were taken from the home of a former employer in 2010 and 2011.
Court record show McCloud is charged with one count each of theft of $60,000 or more, a Class B felony, and theft of $10,000 or more, a Class C felony.
Sullivan County Sheriff's Detective John Porter said the owner called the sheriff in October 2011 when he discovered the gold and coins missing from a safe. The victim told investigators he let McLeod move into his home and paid him $350 per week to do small jobs.
The victim told investigators he checked his safe after hearing McCloud had been arrested in several burglaries in Johnson City.
Investigators said McLeod during a police interview admitted taking the gold bars in 2010 and then returning to take silver and gold coins and a handgun in February 2011.
The victim, whose name was not divulged, told police McLeod did "a good job" while employed and left some time in 2010.
The coins were traced to dealers in Kingsport and Roanoke, Va.
